$80,000 to invest...where?

So if you got an unexpected cash flow of $80,000 where would you invest it? Property? Stocks, long term savings plan?

I cannot use this for a vacation even though I would love to!!

My DH and I are both self employed so we really need to put this to work or us.

Any helpful ideas?

Re: $80,000 to invest...where?

I'd probably speak with a financial adviser who could tell me the best places to invest it for my needs.

If I had kids I would put it into their 529B. If not I would probably put it into an aggressive growth mutual fund, possibly in an IRA.

my favorite financial guru Dave Ramsey always talks of growth stock mutual funds. I have no idea what those are..but he has something called Smart Vestor Pro and you can find advisors near you to guide you.

With the current state of the economy and volatility of the stock market I'm not sure I would do stocks.

That's a good amount of money, you should definitely consult a professional.

I dont think you can ever go wrong with real estate. Well you can ...but in the long run, I think it's the best investment.

$80,000 to invest...where?

I would invest 40K in the market.
And the other half in gold. A lot of people are afraid to invest in gold but I have done well with it.

Re: $80,000 to invest...where?

I’d split 33% each between Stock market index fund, possibly gold as mentioned above & something very safe like a cd or very safe mutual fund.

Re: $80,000 to invest...where?

VSTAX, or the equivalent Fidelity or Charles Schwab funds, or a 2050 or your retirement year fund.

First, do you have an emergency fund? It needs 6 full months of expenses that I would put into a cd ladder or monthly bond funds. Especially because of your stated work situation, you might even need nine months of living expenses saved.

Then, what kind of high interest debt do you have? Anything above 4% is considered high interest, and you may be better off paying that down as opposed to investing depending upon your personal risk tollerance.

Then, I would invest in the total stock market fund or a bogglehead three fund index fund as stated above.

Lastly, I would meet with a financial adviser that has a FIDUCIARY obligation to you. This person is usually a set fee, and not a percentage of the assets you invest. They would have a legal obligation to look out for your best interests. Otherwise you are basically meeting a used car salesman in a fancier office.

You need to figure out your time horizon and goals for the money. If you are going to use it for retirement and that is 25 years away, you are going to invest it differently then if you need it a year from now.

Then you need to figure out your risk and how much you can and are willing to take on.

Re: $80,000 to invest...where?

Totally depends on your overall financial picture.

Do you have debt? Emergency savings? Retirement? College funds? Home equity, etc.

You should set goals and have a good view on your current situation and then engage a financial advisor to help you meet those goals.

I would advise against it using it as a downpayment for an investment property because you're both self-employed. If you have a steady salary it might be a good option. If you're like most self-employed people (having good and bad months/seasons), then I don't think it's a good idea.

You said you need it to work for you, so you might not want to take on a whole slew of additional bills that come along with an investment property. Not to mention a ton more in an emergency savings account to make sure you're covered and don't lose your investment property if something happens and aren't earning as much. I'm sure a financial advisor will have much better options for you guys.

Re: $80,000 to invest...where?

As someone who owns an investment property, it is alot of work. You need to be responsible for improvements and repairs, showing the place during vacancies, getting good tenants, dealing with town issues, etc. It requires not only funds but time and sometimes taking days off from work.

The market is volatile right now so if you absolutely can't afford to watch the funds go up and down, then know that there are banks offering 1 year cds for over 2 %.

If you can afford to put some of the money in the market, then maybe look into a diverse selection of mutual funds and/or ETFs and a combination of bank CDs.

In all seriousness though... a financial advisor that is well versed in different investments and the markets is the way to go. I would likely stay away from real estate because we have all seen how that one went but that’s just me personally

If you are investing longterm, I'd do just about all in Vanguard stocks, (IRA, Roth or 401K). Especially since you are both self - employed. I'd think of this as a retirement vehicle.

Re: $80,000 to invest...where?

Possibly real estate. We just invested in a mutual fund recently and feel like our money is hovering around the amount we initially put in with all of the ups and downs.

I have an aunt and uncle who bought a condo in Sarasota FL and they are always trying to convince me to go down there and buy a place. They rent the place out for three months in the winter and they say the money they get from that three months rent covers most of their expenses. I can't afford it but might be something I would look into if I had extra $ to invest.
