Better Late than Never....
DD was born on February 8, 2013 I was high risk all along because of my chronic hypertension, because we used infertility drugs and because throughout the entire pregnancy, DD was really tiny...they kept telling me my hypertension is what was causing her to be so small.
In the last 2 months leading up to the birth, i had to go in twice a week to my OBGYN for checkups and for weekly growth sonos.
Once I hit 38w, they scheduled me for an induction. I went in on February 2nd and they started me on the cervadil. They kept me on it for 1 full day and I literally made NO progress. I was in so much pain, but they wouldn't give me an epidural/pain meds until they saw some progress. after a full day in the hospital, my OBGYN let me know that they could keep trying to force labor or I could go home and relax and try again in another week. I chose to go home. I was so upset and disapointed! who goes in for an induction and DOESN"T have a baby!
the next week, i went back to the OBGYN for so many checkups, that Monday, I went back for another growth sono and they let me know she was still very small, and that by the end of the week, I would be induced again. On Thursday I was given the OK and I checked back into NYU and started on the foley ball. It worked, somewhat and it got me up to being 4cm dilated. I was in so much pain at this point....but I knew that I couldn't get an epidural because i had had scoliosis corrective surgery as a teenager and the metal rods went too far down my spine for the epidural/spinal to be effective. the only drug they could give me was a narcotic, but that would cross into my DD's blood stream so i opted not to take it. they tried the epidural anyway just to see, and it did nothing for me. for 25 hours i was in labor, barely making any progress, it was painful and frustrating to not see anything happen....on Feb 8th, at 10am my OBGYN came in to check me and they completely lost DD's heartbeat. they couldn't find it no matter what they did and my heart dropped thinking I had just carried her for so long and now something happened! they pulled me into an emergency csection. they kept pinching my legs to see if i could feel anything but since the pi never worked i felt everything and they were forced to put me under. DH was never allowed int he room and i was unconscious when DD took her first breath. It kills me and still makes me cry that I wasn't there to hold her and kiss her hello. Even DH didn't get to hold her until after I was stitched up, a good 20 min later.
During the csection, (i was told by my mom) DH was practically trying to trying to push his way into the delivery room and was being restrained when a HUGE explosion occurred. at this point DD was already delivered and I was already stitched up. it was loud enough that i heard it in my sleep and jarred me enough to hear it but i passed right back out. everyone in the OR ran around screaming FIRE! Someone grabbed DD and raced her out of the room. DH tried to run back into the room to grab me but they kept pushing him back out and there was so much smoke everywhere you couldn't see a few feet ahead of you. the fire alarm went off and the fire dept came. that whole section of the hospital was shut down and my OBGYN raced back in to the OR to se what had gone wrong. Turns out that one of the machines that monitors the anesthesia exploded and caused a lot of smoke and a huge loud bang....no one was actually hurt but DH and I were really scared afterwards that the loud noise would affect our DD's hearing (her test scores came back perfect later on, so thank goodness she was ok)
Because of all of this, NYU gave me my own private room, free of cost to me and my insurance.
DD was indeed a very small peanut weighing in at just 4lbs10oz. by the time we left the hospital she was down to 4lbs3oz and she was so little i didn't know what to do with her, i was scared i would break her, but she's growing unbelievably well and is an all around healthy, beautiful baby girl.
