Biden's 1.9 Trillion Dollar Plan
Surprised not one word about this.
No concerns over any of it and the economy, especially the $15/hour minimum wage?

Biden's 1.9 Trillion Dollar Plan
My only concern at this juncture is the min wage should be $20 an hour.

Biden's 1.9 Trillion Dollar Plan
And just to list the items in the plan, for discussion points:
Direct payments of $1,400 to most Americans, bringing the total relief to $2,000, including December's $600 payments
Increasing the federal, per-week unemployment benefit to $400 and extending it through the end of September
Increasing the federal minimum wage to $15 per hour
Extending the eviction and foreclosure moratoriums until the end of September
$350 billion in state and local government aid
$170 billion for K-12 schools and institutions of higher education
$50 billion toward Covid-19 testing
$20 billion toward a national vaccine program in partnership with states, localities and tribes
Making the Child Tax Credit fully refundable for the year and increasing the credit to $3,000 per child ($3,600 for a child under age 6)

I would be all for that but how do you go from $7 to the proposed $15 in many areas of the country?
People will lose their jobs and/or prices of things will have to be pushed up.

Re: Biden's 1.9 Trillion Dollar Plan
I am actually thrilled that there will FINALLY be a national plan to help this country deal with the ramifications of this pandemic. This will get more money in the hands of Americans, it will ease their financial burdens, it will help to repair the broken economy, it will allow for more testing but more importantly, it will help to speed up vaccine production and distribution.
I am eagerly looking forward to him taking office and getting this plan off the ground. This country desperately needs direction and help, we have been floundering for months.

I don’t believe that theory, as it’s not true and doesn’t work. Its suggested any time there’s a small increase and it doesn’t happen. Money in the hands of average people will boost the economy.
Look at the CEO Dan Price who paid his workers 70k.

Yes and that was great but for most companies, they can't do that. Then what happens to people working for say $20/hour and the kid serving them burgers is making $5 less. How can these companies afford to give promotions also?

Exactly.
Studies show that as long as it's phased in the job market does not shrink.
Low wage workers spend their extra money. It goes right back into the economy - and fast.
You have to look at the purchasing power of minimum wage and its steady decline since the 70s. It's shameful.
It's time to give people dignity in their work. The last 10 months shows us how much we need grocery store workers, retail workers, etc. It's not ok that we don't take care of them and this fix is long overdue. Not to mention that $15 an hour is not exactly a king's ransom anyway.

My overall position would be that the cost of everything has gone up and wages have been stagnant since 1970, so adjustments need to be made. An easy initial fix is CEOs not making 300x as much as their average worker.
The American worker is well overdue for a living wage.

Yes, this. I just wrote something on the Florida minimum wage for a reading comprehension on one of my exams.
There have been studies that if it is done in increments, it is fine for the most part. One study said the first raise up until ~$11 went fine, but another said the second jump to ~$13 did not go that well. However, the second jump was complicated by a lot of factors. That was in Washington state—Seattle I think.
Florida won’t reach the $15 until 2026.
It’s about time the minimum wage was raised.

Florida just voted and approved raising their minimum wage to $15 per hour. They will use the phased approach the way we did on Long Island. If Florida can do it, any state can do it.

FL's is $11, correct? Many places are still at $7.

I think they only need 10 R’s to pass it. But I think they could resort to using a procedure where you only need a majority vote.
Someone feel free to correct me if I’m wrong.

I think it had to do with the Georgia run offs. Things had gotten messy. R’s wanted $600. Trump switched positions and wanted more. Dems agreed with Trump.
Mitch was shocked and now in a bad position. This then also put the two candidates in Georgia in a bad spot - they were advocates of $600 and not more. Now Trump wasn’t on the same page as them.
Mitch needed those two in GA to win to keep him as majority leader. So he sort of stuck by them and not Trump. Mostly just for himself.
I think I have that somewhat right.
Edited to add that it’s awful no matter what on all sides. People were and are struggling. Shouldn’t be a political football.

I would agree. I think a lot has changed. I think Mitch wants to distance his party from Trump. Others on his side want to embrace Trumpism.
On the left, you have some more progressive people mad at Biden for only serving up $1400. They wanted $2000 and didn’t realize that the $1400 was because people just got $600.
So it’s sort of like these more extreme factions in each party dividing a bit on things. It’s a messed up tug of war.

I don’t think it works that way in the sense of a credit card bill. Someone else here can probably explain it better, but it’s nothing to lose sleep over, let’s put it that way.
The most pressing issue for future generations is environmental concerns. Mico plastics in the ocean, etc.

Are you serious?
Minimum wage jobs were not meant to be “careers”. We need to focus on how to get employees in minimum wage jobs the education or skills they need to get a career. Not a “job”
Sorry, but the kid bagging my groceries doesn’t deserve $20 an hour. The adult bagging my groceries deserves access to skills and knowledge to get them moved up to either a management position in their minimum wage JOB or another field.

Yes, I’m serious. There are countless people who do have minimum wage jobs as careers. People with various disabilities, special needs, or just regular folk.
I believe in a living wage for my fellow citizens, one that affords them a decent life and self-respect.
It is sad to me that people find $20 an hour as ridiculous but don’t bay an eye at a single male CEO making 80 million a year when his employees are on food stamps.
