Inflation means everything increases. Minimum wage increases (or it should). Just above minimum increases, and each notch bumps up to the next notch.

It's been doing that since the 1940's.

https://www.dol.gov/agencies/whd/minimum-wage/history/chart

Unless people think Minimum Wage should never increase, and should have stayed at 25 cents like when it was first enacted?

(Just random snippets from the chart linked above)
Oct 24, 1938 $0.25
Mar 1, 1956 $1.00
May 1, 1974 $2.00
Apr 1, 1991 $4.25
Jul 24, 2009 $7.25

Minimum wage hasn't increased in almost 12 years. Do you think Cost of Living hasn't increased during those 11 years? People making minimum wage are earning LESS each year because it's less buying power.

https://www.epi.org/publication/labor-day-2019-minimum-wage/#:~:text=The%20federal%20minimum%20wage%20is,hour%20in%20this%20year's%20dollars.
From 2019:

Summary: The real value of the federal minimum wage has dropped 17% since 2009 and 31% since 1968. Workers earning the federal minimum wage today have $6,800 less per year to spend on food, rent, and other essentials than did their counterparts 50 years ago.

https://edlabor.house.gov/imo/media/doc/FactSheet-RaisingTheMinimumWageIsGoodForWorkers,Businesses,andTheEconomy-FINAL.pdf

Raising the federal minimum wage will also stimulate consumer spending, help businesses’ bottom lines, and grow the economy. A modest increase would improve worker productivity, and reduce employee turnover and absenteeism. It would also boost the overall economy by generating increased consumer demand.

Businesses Support Raising the Minimum Wage

Business executives support a higher minimum wage. A survey conducted by Republican pollster Frank Luntz that was leaked to the Washington Post in April found that 80 percent of business executives supported increasing the minimum wage.
• Small business owners support a higher minimum wage. A national poll of small business owners conducted by the American Sustainable Business Council found that 60 percent of small business owners support increasing the federal minimum wage to $12 by 2020 and indexing it to inflation.
• Businesses are voluntarily raising wages. Hundreds of businesses across the country have pledged to pay their workers at least $12 an hour by 2020.

Raising the Minimum Wage Boosts the Economy
• Raising the minimum wage does not kill jobs. Leading economists have found that increases in the minimum wage have no discernible effect on employment, including employment in high-impact sectors like restaurants and retail.
• Recent experience in cities that have raised their minimum wages provides further support. San Francisco increased its tipped minimum wage to $12.25, before tips, and experienced positive job growth in the leisure and hospitality industry the following year.
• Raising the minimum wage increases consumer spending and boosts the economy. A study by Doug Hall and David Cooper estimated that a $2.55 increase in the minimum wage would increase the
earnings of low-wage workers by $40 billion and result in a significant increase in GDP and
employment.
• A raise in the minimum wage predominantly benefits low-wage workers, precisely those most likely to put additional income directly back into the economy, kick starting a virtuous cycle of greater demand for goods and services, job growth, and increased productivity

Yes and unfortunately many don’t get raises for many years. I don’t want to have to pay more to get a burger and fries because they want to pay a 16 year old $15/hour.

Minimum wage isn't suppose to be "career wage" but $7 (in some places) is OBSCENE in 2021. I was making $6.50/hr as a cashier at Harrow's 26 years ago!! Minimum wage absolutely needs a bump, people should at least be able to put some food on the table after a 40 hr work week.

Teens are not the only ones working min wage jobs, many adults only have minimum wage jobs to get by. Some work 2-3 of them and still cannot make ends meet.

The places that are at $7 have very low rents, mortgages and taxes. That is why it equals out. I am all for higher minimum wages but I also can’t afford to pay more for things and want more people to be able to work. Layoffs will happen as they will not be able to afford to pay everyone $15/hour.

I lived in FL from 97-01, it was DIRT CHEAP to live there, minimum wage at the time was around $4.40/hr and I can assure, that was garbage money even in a place with a very low cost of living.

Realistically, minimum wage is off base from cost of living and inflation.

Many states have less COL, taxes at 1,000 year, houses for under $200,000. The only thing I have seen with these places is that food is about the same price (food stores). FL is not cheap anymore like it used to be.

FL is still very cheap, I have many friends and family there.

Reality is, there is no way you can make $7/hr and afford a $200K house plus bills, food, car etc. Across the nation, there needs to be an increase because again, minimum wage is not aligned with COL or inflation.

Agreed

I think the problem is those of you who look down on those who work minimum wage jobs. Not everyone can afford a masters and get a high paying job but these people still need to support themselves. Home health aides are one of the worst paying jobs, they make shit and have to do alot. A kid bagging groceries at $7/hr for 20 hr/week does not amount to much and yes these are part time jobs not "careers" but not everyone canhas the cognitive functioning to attend college. Some people work at Walmart mart and maybe thats the best they are going to do for themselves but they still deserve a living wage and to be able to provide basic needs for their family. Obviously what's going on this country in terms of paying a living wage is not working since there is so much bbn poverty. Step outside your privelidge for a minute and look at the other side....

Eta: not to mention all the jobs that have gone overseas. When my parents were in their 20s and 30s used to be you could get a decent job with a pension, buy a house for $40k and make just enough to live comfortably, provide for your family, and eventually retire. Not the case anymore. We barely make enough to pay our taxes. We need some releif...

I didn’t read all the responses but I’m going to stand by my standard statement of where are we getting all this money to pay for it.

And really another round of stimulus checks. Why are we giving money to people who did not lose income???!!!!

Because it's too much work to figure out who actually lost income and who did not...

My only concern at this juncture is the min wage should be $20 an hour.

I would be all for that but how do you go from $7 to the proposed $15 in many areas of the country?

People will lose their jobs and/or prices of things will have to be pushed up.

I don’t believe that theory, as it’s not true and doesn’t work. Its suggested any time there’s a small increase and it doesn’t happen. Money in the hands of average people will boost the economy.

Look at the CEO Dan Price who paid his workers 70k.

Exactly.

Studies show that as long as it's phased in the job market does not shrink.

Low wage workers spend their extra money. It goes right back into the economy - and fast.

You have to look at the purchasing power of minimum wage and its steady decline since the 70s. It's shameful.

It's time to give people dignity in their work. The last 10 months shows us how much we need grocery store workers, retail workers, etc. It's not ok that we don't take care of them and this fix is long overdue. Not to mention that $15 an hour is not exactly a king's ransom anyway.

I think we share a brain. Chat Icon

Re: Biden's 1.9 Trillion Dollar Plan

60% of minimum wage earners are over the age of 25.

bls doc

I'm curious how many are 18-25. I would suspect a decent amount but I can't find the data quickly.

The truth is that most minimum wage earners are trying to run households and it's time they got some help.

Are you serious?

Minimum wage jobs were not meant to be “careers”. We need to focus on how to get employees in minimum wage jobs the education or skills they need to get a career. Not a “job”

Sorry, but the kid bagging my groceries doesn’t deserve $20 an hour. The adult bagging my groceries deserves access to skills and knowledge to get them moved up to either a management position in their minimum wage JOB or another field.

You have no idea how the world works.

Why are you advocating for corporate welfare?

So many full time employees of Amazon, Walmart, McDonald’s and large grocery chains are the biggest recipients of welfare. Because they work 40 hrs a week but taxpayers have to give them money for food, not their employer.

Your logic is weak, without factual basis and shows a general Ignorance about the socio-economic conditions of our country.

Please go read a book.

Exactly. That only will have people try to do the minimum in life and no competition for jobs. Why should someone bagging groceries made a few dollars less than myself for the amount of work and years of experience I have? Why would I bother working my butt off, going over and beyond working more hours than needed, if I could work at an entry level job and make the same?

Your comments are so ignorant. What is your logic for saying there will be no competition for jobs if we pay people (who need to stay alive in order to work) a living wage?

Your argument of wanting to prevent benefit for others because you want to maintain some predefined distance between them and you to maintain your feeling of supremacy is disgusting. Work on bettering your own life/career and don’t deny others access to basic wages, healthcare etc.

You are a white supremacist. You are the problem in America, not people seeking to work and use that work to provide for themselves. And if you say “oh no that’s not me” then realize you are aiding and abetting them and adopting their policies, which is just as bad.

What will it take to wake you up? Your very argument is what the republicans use to manipulate you into voting against your own best interests. It’s how they turn you against anyone “below” in some sort of class war. Meanwhile, they continue to exploit all of us and give the rich and corporations tax breaks. It’s sad how easily you fall into it.

I think this thread also shows just general conditioning. People are used to the status quo, to just muddle through, thinking that this is just how it is.

Again, CEOs making 300x more than their average worker, paying significantly less in taxes, when amazon and Walmart employees are on welfare, there is an issue that needs to be fixed.

Taxes need to be adjusted for middle class too.

There is also a lot of “well I got mine.” When what you collectively have isn’t much.

Also, the easiest way for people to get off of government aid? Pay them a fair wage.

Do you make minimum wage? Does your husband? Not all adults make over minimum wage and it makes no sense for a teenager looking to make gas money and spending money to make the same or more than an adult who has children and a home.

Why would you feel sorry for my children? Just like myself, you work your way up in life and a teenager should not be making the same amount of money as their parents who have jobs with more responsibilities and real bills to pay. Parents who have worked 20 and 30 years.

Wow you can’t be serious. Why would I want a teenager living at home having no bills making a few dollars more than someone who has degree. Or someone who owns a home and has a family and bills.
You sound very previleged and no clue how people really live.

You have no respect for other people.

I feel sad that you have children. I hope they are more positively influenced by their friends and classmates so they grow up to be kinder members of society.

A lot of teenagers don’t work for only “spending money and gas money.” That’s a very ignorant and privileged thing to say. I know I didn’t.

So you think they should make $15 or $20 an hour at an entry level job? You had bills at 15 and 16 to pay?

What is the point of asking me these questions? I already stated that teenagers don’t only work for spending money and gas money. Teenagers can have bills and things to save for in the future. You are so privileged and ignorant that you aren’t even worth any further responses.

My only concern at this juncture is the min wage should be $20 an hour.

It has nothing to do with privilege as you have no idea how I grew up or my husband or my kids. Do you think a teenager should make the same as an adult in the job force for 20 or 30 years? Most teenagers are working at entry level jobs that don’t take a degree or experience. You would rather a teenager take a job from an adult with a family and a home?

I didn’t read all the responses but I’m going to stand by my standard statement of where are we getting all this money to pay for it.

And really another round of stimulus checks. Why are we giving money to people who did not lose income???!!!!

Why are we giving PPP loan money to giant billion dollar corporations and wealthy individuals to buy yachts with instead of the small businesses that actually needed it to survive?

How about posing the question this way. What is your reason for why they shouldn't? Because you worked so many years to get there and now it's simply not fair to YOU?

https://www.epi.org/publication/ceo-compensation-2018/

CEO compensation has grown 940% since 1978
Typical worker compensation has risen only 12% during that time
...

I think we should be focusing on the top tier salaries, not the bottom tier salaries....

Very true but many deserve what they make.

Why is it when this discussion comes up that the CEO deserves to make $50M salary, but the guy who cleans the toilets and stocks the shelves and packs the online orders deserves to eat out of a dumpster? Can the CEO not live a nice life on $5M or is that slumming it? The difference sure would go a long way towards keeping the lower workers who keep the company afloat from splitting a cardboard box under a bridge with 4 roommates and needing public assistance just to eat.

And why does all the money for increased wages have to come from the consumer? The consumer already paid the wages for the company's employees. It's just that like vultures the top tier management pulled up to the buffet first and ate it all and left the scraps for the lower workers and then passed the buck to keep their employees from starving on to the tax payer. Then they turned around and bought the politicians to eat the whole public assistance system. You can't have it both ways.

If the CEO can't survive on $5M salary then maybe he/she needs to buy fewer Starbucks lattes and pull themselves up by the bootstraps.

Good question why are we?

How about the government actually take the time and figure out how to give money to people and businesses that actually need it instead of just blindly giving it out.

Yes, we need to take the time to get the plan right and compare it to the current state of affairs. I want Biden and the administrative to be great, especially since they are set up way better than Obama was with the control of senate and house. However, I feel like the administration is already making these aggressive promises. 100 million vaccinations, trillions in dollars of relief. I’m not saying they can’t do it but they are stepping in a big pile of sh!t and need to make sure they do this right or as methodically planned out as they can.

And at the end of the day, who ends up paying for all this - WE DO!

So, if I am reading this right minimum wage shouldn't be increased because it wouldn't be fair to YOU? Might I suggest that if you are unhappy with your salary you go look for a higher paying job. You don't get to keep others down just so you can feel better about yourself and what you make. Minimum wage is an absolute joke and as a society we should do better in providing people with better work opportunities and better pay because when one does better we all do better as a whole. If 2020 has taught people anything is that lower wage workers are essential to our communities, we should pay them more than pennies.

Also, MANY teens work not for "fun money" but to help support their families, buy a car, fund their college accounts. etc. If they are working the same minimum wage job as an adult then they deserve the same money. Period. I had many friends that NEEDED to work (sometimes TWO jobs) just so they would have money to get by because their families didn't have much money.

Your comments are not only tone deaf but insensitive.
