911 Lesson Plans
I feel as if I need to come up with some new lessons, especially for the 10th anniversary. The students I have now, middle school, are so far removed from the event that I am not getting that emotional connection I use to.
Any ideas? Thanks!

Re: 911 Lesson Plans
Just popped on this board to write the EXACT SAME post (im MS too). Our admin wants us to do something on nationalism or tolerance or service to the country. I have ZERO ideas

Re: 911 Lesson Plans
I teach 7th grade and last year I showed them a BrainPop video explaining the events, etc. bc they were only about 2 when it happened.
Afterwards, I gave them an option of 4 assignments that had to do with freedom, patriotism, tolerance and personal response (kind of just gave a prompt for them to respond to based on those topics). They were asked to include a picture or drawing. When they were done I put all their responses on red, white and blue construction paper and made a 9-11 Memorial "Quilt" on the bulletin board.

Re: 911 Lesson Plans
I read the picture book "The Man who Walked Between the Towers" (I teach High School English) It may seem juvenile, but afterward we talk about the author's choice to right about this one, amazing, true event and why it is important to remember the memories that the twin towers provided the city with for decades. I have had a lot of success with it! Good Luck

Re: 911 Lesson Plans
Great ideas! I love the idea of the quilt and using brain pop, I didn't even think of that.
Also, I LOVE using children's books in MS, I use many of them. I am going to check the library for this book. Thanks!

Re: 911 Lesson Plans
We don't have specific lesson plans for that day, out of respect for the families who were effected by 9/11. I work in a district that was pretty devastated by it, so we try to make sure to be sensitive to the kids who lost someone on that day. We do have a school-wide moment of silence.

I was going to suggest the same book. You can also tie it into philippe petite and different types of courage.

Re: 911 Lesson Plans
A professor of mine read us a children's book a few years ago about 9/11. I just tried to do a Google search for it...I think it may be September Roses.
