a bit concerned (name responding) and a ?
ds is almost 9 months and he still doesn't answer to his name. sometimes he smiles but won't look at me. i know every child is different with milestones and all but i also know that a lot of babies have been "responding" to their name since they were much longer than ds. yes, we all have nicknames for him and i've recently made evryone start calling him by his name instead but i'm still a bit worried. we play games and sing songs using his name too.
what do you all think? when did your dc start looking at you when you call their name?
thanks

Re: a bit concerned (name responding) and a ?
What exactly does he do when you call his name? How can you get his attention?
DD was probably about 4 months when she started responding to her name.
Have you mentioned this to your ped? I have no idea what's "normal" or not, but it can't hurt to look into.

he either is so into what he's playing with that he doesn't look at me or he smiles and keeps doing what he's doing.
the weird thing is he knows words and some sign langauge and reacts to them appropriately. like "bfing-milk", "come here", "up", etc.

I would mention it to your ped. If anything to get the peace of mind.
Although I have to say that ignoring people is definitely a male trait.

Troy does respond to his name. But there are times when I have to say it 3, 4, or 5 times before he'll look at me.
I'd mention it to Ped, just to see what they say.

This may be a stupid q but how do you know if your DC is responding to his/her name and not just the sound of your voice?

Re: a bit concerned (name responding) and a ?
My DS did not respond to his name EVER. It was very concerning for me..only recently will he finally acknowledge that I am calling him..and he is 17 months!
His hearing was fine (we had it tested). He was so active and involved in what he was doing and tuned all else out...it has taken some time, but he is finally responding to his name. I think you should talk to your ped. just to be safe but its a pretty normal thing!

Christopher does this too sometimes. I think it's because he can kind of be a brat sometimes

Re: a bit concerned (name responding) and a ?
I thought I just read something recently that said most babies don't actually recognize their name until almost a year.
And of course, now I can't remember where I read it to verify that I'm not just making it up!!

Although I have to say that ignoring people is definitely a male trait. That's what I kept saying when DS wouldn't respond to me calling his name! LOL! I was worried when he was 9 mos too...but daycare told me he was responding to them (not all the time but enough for them not to be worried) I figure maybe he just knew I'll go over to him if he doesn't react to hearing his name 2x being called...?
He's 18 months now and he totally responds to it! Even if I'm talking about him he'll come over if I say his name. Too funny.

Re: a bit concerned (name responding) and a ?
We worried about this A LOT. To the point where we consulted with Liza(lipstickjunky) just to be sure she wasn't autistic! She finally started responding to her name at about 11 months and the doc wasn't worried about it at all. She has a ton of nicknames too so I think she had no idea of her own name! So no worries- as long as he interacts with you and gives you eye contact, its fine
