a bittersweet thing happened to me last night (a little long)
I got 3 1/2 hours of sleep with ZERO pain in my leg. My usual excruciating sciatica was nowhere to be found when I got up to go to the bathroom at 4am!
Know what it took? I noticed that my side of the mattress is worn down a little in the middle, and more raised at the top. So I was sitting there and thinking to myself, "Using a pillow when the mattress is already raised is probably only compacting the bad disc in my back". So, I slept the first 3 1/2 hours of the night with NO pillow...only a rolled-up handtowel to support my neck. And 2 giant pillows under my legs. And it worked.
Now, I say that this is bittersweet because even if this works, I'm only allowed to sleep on my back for another 3 1/2 weeks. Also, for no reason at all, the pain returned at about 6am, and was relentless until I got up.
SO, the nice thing is that I was able to sleep almost 4 hours with NO PAIN...but the bad thing is that it wasn't infallible, and even if I do it every single night now, my time is limited.
Sorry so long--I know a bunch of you have wanted to know how my pain is doing, so I wanted to give you a bit of an update.

I'm so happy you were able to at least get a good night's sleep. Enjoy it now, and don't worry about the weeks ahead just yet!!

Re: a bittersweet thing happened to me last night (a little long)
i am glad you got some relief... but why would you only be allowed to sleep on your back for a few more weeks? i still sleep on my back sometimes with no bad side effects - right now, its usually the only position that is comfortable to me!!

My OB told me it was safe up to 24 weeks.
If I could get away with it for longer, that would be amazing!!!!

Re: a bittersweet thing happened to me last night (a little long)
on the brighter side, i spoke to my mom this morning and we were discussing labor
my mom has 7 slipped discs and sciatic nerve that is pinched; all due to her lupus and she told me that her back pain was MUCH worse than labor pain

ahh... see my doctor never said anything.
keep in mind that sleeping on your back does NOT effect your baby, it would ONLY affect you - so if you can sleep on your back without losing feeling in your legs or getting lightheaded, i would do it... but that's is JMO, i am not a doctor.

GOOD LORD, Laura! I literally can't fathom the pain of 7 slipped discs. Last summer I herniated 2 discs at the same time and I was literally BEGGING for surgery. My heart REALLY goes out to your mom, especially for the sciatica. It is the most mentally draining and exhausting thing I've been through.
It's funny, because I jokingly said to DH the other night, "I bet after all of this pain in my leg, a natural childbirth would be easy!"

Re: a bittersweet thing happened to me last night (a little long)
seriously beth i have told you before how much i feel for you and your pain because i know what my mom goes through and it is excrutiating
my mom did have natural childbirth with me - not my sister; she had some type of spinal thing
i was born in 45 minutes but when i asked her about labor pains, literally she said they are nothing compared to her back pain

If your not laying completly flat on your back it won't hurt you. I sometimes wake up on my back and I am almost 34 weeks. It sounds like you are pretty well propped up, ask your Dr again, but I think you would be ok
