A/C and conserving electricity question

We are in an apartment and I'm home during the day... I try to keep the windows open for cross ventilation all the time and just throw the AC on 74 for a few minutes to take the humidity out. Today that's not cutting it. Is it better for me to keep the A/C on 74 for the afternoon or to put it on and off only when I'm in the office? I know that turning things on and off wastes energy, but I'm not sure which is better for the environment (and my electric bill!).

Do you keep it on for hours even if you're in and out of the room or should you only have it on when you're in the room?

I only turn the AC on in the evenings when i get home to take the humidity out of the house. Then i turn it off for the rest of the night.

does it have an energy saver setting? I only turn ours on in the bedroom at night to take out the humidity - its on 77 on the energy saver setting, so it turns off when it reaches 77 degrees. It is off most of the time.

yeah, it's on energy saver mode on 76 right now....

Is it better/cheaper/greener to keep it on when I run to the store in a while or to shut it off?

Keep it on. If you know you are going to be out for a while turn the temp up to say 78 and turn it back to 76 when you get home. You burn more electricity to turn it on and off all day then keep it on all day. Just adjust the temps at time in the day when it doesn't have to be so cool.

Re: A/C and conserving electricity question

We keep it on when we're home during the day at 70 on the energy saver mode because it cools our entire downstairs and won't work if it's any higher. When we go out, I pump it up to about 77 and it kicks on when it reaches that. I wouldn't say our electric bill has been high or anything.
