A cashier handed johnny a peanut butter cracker today while i was paying...
And he ended up with welts all over his chin!!
I saw her hand him something and looked...I go "what is that?" and she goes "oh its a cracker, all kids love crackers".
I let it slide because I am usually never overly neurotic but he spit it out and i saw it was one of those orange crackers with peanut butter in the middle..
Keep in mind I've given him very small amounts before and one time he had one welt on his chin after he ate it, but I thought it was a bug bite.
Well he had about 4 welts with red blotches around it...but nothing else happened?! He was fine and never whined or anything...I am taking him for allergy testing on friday to be safe.
I am just more perplexed that a STRANGER would hand a child a food of any kind without asking the parent. She was baffled why I was weirded out...I told her that I wasn't sure if he had a peanut allergy b/c we just don't give it to him and she laughed it off and said "oh he'll be fine". UGH!!!

Wow.. Her reaction is what would have pizzed me off the most.. and i think i would have spoken to a manager. She needs to learn you cant just say "oh well hell be fine".. what if something severe had happened.

That is unbelievable to me. What does she live under a rock? She doesn't read about peanut allergies? And why in the world would she think it was okay because she was a stranger!!! Ugh...this infuriates me. I'm sorry and I hope he feels okay!!

That is absolutely ridiculous. Why would she think that a mom would be okay with a stranger giving her son a cracker. Added to that she gave him a peanut butter cracker. I would be furious. I would definitely call and talk to the manager. Her behavior is unacceptable. I hope your son is okay.

that is ridiculous - she should have asked first AND she should not be handing out any kind of peanut anything - You should call the store and tell the manager...if he had a really bad reaction you could have sued the store.

I know...the thing is that I noticed the welts after we had left the store..I cursed myself for not having spoken up more to her after she handed the cracker to him.
I'm a real baby who hates confrontation so I hesitated and told myself it wasn't worth an argument.
He is going on friday to be tested...I don't know what to expect, I am assuming it's peanut butter...this stinks!! BUT the only good thing is that this incident may be the thing to catch the allergy..the ONLY good to come of it!!
He is fine too BTW!! Thanks everyone for responding...

Glad he is fine. As much as giving my child food would not have bothered me too, too much - she should know better. Even after you left - I would have called the manager later that night or the next day. Her reaction to a possible peanut allergy was not right. She may be very uninformed and her manager should know that her giving food and her response was not appropriate. I would call the manager and explain what happened and to let them know just in case she did that to a child with a severe allergy.

One of these days people are going to learn that they should ask the parents before they do anything-- with all the allergies out there I can't believe that she would think it's ok.

I'm glad he is ok. You have every right to be mad. I would go back in to just let her know he had a reaction, and tell
her that she should never feed a child she doesn't know. (especially peanut butter)

In this day and age to give a kid food is unheard of and unforgivable. I am not neurotic but would have been livid. What If he had a serious allegy and god forbid something awful happened? She would have been liable. I also don't need a stranger telling me its fine to receive food from them. I would have really given her a long, calm and thorough lecture though. Just to scare her from doing it again, I would have lied and said my child is allergic and she could have killed them. I would still go back to show her and the manager the welts!!!!!
