A fellow SAHM tried to scare me last night...tell me everything you know about

sight words please?

Is there a main list? Is he sounding them out of just memorizing them?
I found some lists online...

i guess the first week of kindergarten he will be tested on his sight word knowledge.

Thrown in a class. Labeled and Locked away, key tossed away forever.

Sight words are memorized words - they don't sounds them out typically. If you google it you can find lots of lists out there and a better explanation. I know my friend who is a kindergarten teacher was the first one who told me about it and that is what I did. She recommended a workbook which I bought over the summer but DS had no interest in the book. He took some interest in reading over the summer so he had a bunch of words he can recognize and at the end of summer he was enjoying trying to sound things out - I found the old baby flash cards and hid the pictures and he and my 3 yr old loved doing this during dinner.

My son told me last night his kindergarten teacher tested them this week on reading. ... gather common words. The only ones he told me were no, mom, dad, the, to. That was all he could remember. He said he knew all but 1. He said they tested him on colors, shapes, lower case and upper case letters, numbers and reading (per my son).

sight words are common words that tend to be repeated over and over in grade leveled texts that the children read.

Each grade has a list, although different schools modify them to fit their needs. As a teacher, we "informally" evaluate the children in the beginning of the year to get a baseline to plan our lessons and to know how to differenciate our lessons for each child.

I usually suggest to parents to put the sight words on index cards to help the kids get to know them.

Just remember that reading is not only about memorizing sight words. My DD did not ever do this and learned to read by just reading lots of books! DD #2 kindergarten teacher just reminded parents of this during "meet the teacher", that sight words are part of reading but there is so much more to what reading is (comprehension, etc.).

I have never had a preschooler before, I don't know what is expected.

we are doing 2 days on each word.
so far we have THE
and AT
today is NO day.

he seems to be enjoying it and really loves picking these 2 words out in his books at night.

Is this something the teacher is recommending doing? My DD's K teacher did not mention reviewing site words at home.

He needs to know this for his preschool? DS is 3 and just started preschool and will go for two years b/f starting K. He does know some words just b/c he picks them up from stories (he has a very good memory) but, its not something I ever thought about or ever thought he needed to know - his nursery school teacher seemed impressed even that he could count and recognized the numbers, i guess she is behind Chat Icon Chat Icon
