I hope she does! I know it’s an area that people wait for homes to get listed. Which is why I figured I’d share it here just in case. It really is Move In ready which is also quite nice. She lived there for 18 years and raised her kids there. Bittersweet for them for sure.

I'm sure you're friend will have no problem selling bc it's a cute house but these prices are ridiculous for such tiny houses. I have almost 4000sqft for 100k less in Suffolk.

I know right? Prices in Long Island (and other areas surrounding NYC) are outrageous for what you get. Not to mention the taxes.

It is insane, but if you work in the city the amount of time you save in commuting is worth more than anything.

Of course. It's just the whole thing is insanity. The whole area. What you pay for what you get.

Totally. My dh works in the city for 1 week per month and stays in a hotel. We knew we wanted to live out east and when this job came along that was his only requirement was that he was not going to commute back and forth that one week so they offered to pay for the hotel.
Regardless some people work in the city and still can't afford Nassau prices.

It’s nauseating. We’re looking in southern westchester and will pay ~$300k more than what we’ll sell our house for in mid-Nassau....for the same size house (or even smaller!)

We live in FP, there is not a lot of inventory- we had to wait a while to get in here. That is a great house, I am sure it will go fast!

House prices in Queens are insane - but the taxes are lower than in Nassau. In my area of Queens, a house like that, same size would be about $850k. A developer would buy it, tear it down to build a two family or would convert it into a 1 family McMansion.

But then you have to pay NYC income taxes which puts you back over. NYC taxes can get expensive depending on your income.

This is true! And NYC taxes are increasing, too.

That's why I am moving out of state when I retire in a few years. NY / NY / CT are way too expensive to live in, especially on a fixed income.

This. I can't believe it's that much for such a small house. We're OOS now but whenever we talk about moving back (not by choice, DH's job has asked a few times over the last couple of years) we agree that we'll just rent in Manhattan. No commuting for him and since a house on LI would be overpriced and tiny given what we're used to now, we might as well live in an apt.

But once you own it's really hard to go back to renting. You're basically throwing your money away each month and getting no equity in return. There are affordable houses on LI and other suburbs. No, you won't get a mansion, but you'll have a backyard and storage.

That's such a classist response. Plenty of people choose to rent because they don't want the headache and repsonsibilty of home ownership. They don't want to be bothered with calling repairmen and dealing with appointments and spending money on all that and having surprise emergencies. There is plenty of equity in peace of mind when a property management company is responsible for handling all of that and you simply pay a maintenance fee.

No matter where you live, there is a cost associated with living there. Even when you have paid off your mortgage, you still need to pay property taxes to retain the right to live in the home that you own.
I own a home but would go back to renting in a heartbeat. I hate all the responsibility that comes with owning a home.. And since my husband is out of the house 80 hours a week, it is on me to handle what needs to be done. Often I say that we will sell the house and move into an apartment where we don't have to worry about a thing.

Yep, our mortgage is paid off, and we still have to pay taxes, maintain the house, shovel snow, worry about the lawn, and now we are renovating because we haven't done much updating in about 15 years and I can't even begin to tell you the expense involved in that. I liken renting a house or apartment to leasing a car. Many people say it's a waste of money, but the peace of mind of not having to worry about a car once it's out of warranty and always having something new and fresh with the latest technology and most importantly RELIABLE is worth every penny I "throw away" leasing.

The only reason why I wouldn’t go back to renting now is because our house will hopefully be part of our retirement. When we are retired, we hope to buy something in a complex and pay HOA for all that nonsense. And if not, we’ll rent then.
But renting was a lot easier for sure. I come from renters (grew up in Brooklyn) and because we never purchased, my mother had zilch as she got older. I won’t make that mistake.
