a little annoyed with my Mail Lady (kinda long)
So today my garbage cans were out for pick up. My pick up doesn't come until around 11am. I went out with my mom this morning and didn't come home till late, DH was at work. So, I go to get my mail and their is a post it in my mailbox from my mail lady reading "dont block the mailbox with garbage cans".
Ok, now I get that it is annoying for her but am I not allowed to leave the house until garbage pick up is done? I always make sure to remove the cans as soon as they come but today was one of the few days I was out of the house beforehand.
Is it just me or is that a little rude? What if I worked all day and wasn't home EVER to remove them before mail delivery? Should I say something?

Re: a little annoyed with my Mail Lady (kinda long)
Can you put them on the other side of your driveway?
When we just moved in, we used to put our garbage cans beside the mailbox. Our Postman left a nice note about it (preprinted). We just put them on the other side of the driveway now. He also leaves a note in the winterso everyone doesn't pile up the snow infront of the mailbox.
Your mail lady could have been a little nicer in the note.

You shouldn't need to put the cans in front of the mailbox. It's very inconsiderate. If everyone did that, it would double the amount of time and work she would have to do. Every time that happens, they have to turn off the truck (official rules. They can't leave the vehicle with it running), unbuckle, get out of the truck, walk to your box, then walk back to the truck, buckle their seatbelt, then restart the truck. Plus, it exposes them to puddles, snow, ice, mud, dogs, etc.
Some PostMasters won't let their carriers deliver mail to blocked boxes, either at all, or after a warning or two.

This is what we do, and our pickup is the same time as yours. We've never hade a problem. It's so funny because I am not used to mailboxes by the street - they don't have that anywhere that I know of in Nassau County
I do think that the note could have been nicer though.

I thought it was an unspoken rule to not block mailboxes with anything since it interferes with postal delivery.

It was a little rude, it could have been nicer. I would just move the garbage to the other side if you can. Or further away from the mailbox. Our mailman never comes before our garbage is picked up and the garbage men put our pails back up by our gate so the mailbox isn't blocked.

We dont put the garbage cans in front of the mailbox, it just so happens this is where the garbage men placed them after pickup. They are actually all the way to the side and not near the mailbox. I would never block the mailbox.

Oh, sorry. That's a totally different scenario, then.

She couldn't tell they were empty then?

yes, this was my point. They were laying down on the ground empty, its not like I did it on purpose or just left them there to be annoying. Maybe I should talk to the garbage men about tossing them somewhere else LOL

Re: a little annoyed with my Mail Lady (kinda long)
My husband works for the USPS. So,...take that into consideration.... but she was being nice she could have not even delivered the mail and not have gotten in trouble for it because it is considered blocked. HOWEVER--- I think the note is a little much!

That is def ridic, I would be annoyed too! How are you supposed to control where the garbage men decide to throw the cans?

ITA! If she saw the empty cans it should have struck her as "Oh those dam garbage men"! She definitley should NOT have left a note! I think it was rude, like I said, since it was obvious the garbage men threw the cans there.

I have to agree.
While it is expected that your mailbox is clear for the mail person to deliver (they can hold your mail BTW if they can't access it), it was clear that the garbage cans were empty. Does she expect everyone to be a home during the day? Most people are at work during the day. Left WAY before the garbage men come.

Re: a little annoyed with my Mail Lady (kinda long)
The fact that this was a first time occurence and they were empty is really rude of her.
Complaining to the post office will get you nowhere though. I've complained and it only made it worse. Folded pictures when it says don't bend stuck in my mailbox. Ripped stuff. Everyones mail but my own.

Re: a little annoyed with my Mail Lady (kinda long)
I honestly dont think you should be getting annoyed with her... She is just trying to do her job and the cans are making it more difficult... Think if something was "blocking" you to do your job... and just delayed you... Im sure you would be upset as well...
If the garbage men have been good otherwise and you plan on tipping them for xmas... I would just mention it to them at that point.... Im sure they'll be a bit more receptive to your requests

There was no doubt in my mind that it was the garbage men LOL
Are you home when the mail comes? Maybe you can explain to the mail person that it's the garbage men and not you? The note was a little rude but she does need to do her job.
