thesmokinggun.com did a huge expose on it. 6 pages proving that he lied on almost everything.

I just called my friend, and she saw the story on the Today Show this morning. It was saying that there was no evidence that he ever committed any of the crimes that he claimed he did.
This upsets me..I was so into his story. I was planning on reading the sequel, and now I don't want to, b/c I don't want him profitting off lies!

They are outing him now becaue it was an Oprah's book of the month for her club. CNN had this whole thing this morning as if he wrote the book specifically to deceive Oprah!

Re: A Million Little Pieces
I've been thinking a lot about this. I read the first book and really liked it and am more than halfway through the second. I find it hard not to believe the stuff the smoking gun is saying, but I think a lot of writers embellish things to make the story more interesting.
I know people in real life who will tell a story and embellish a bit, and they tell the story that way for so long, that I think that is actually how they believe it. That could be what happened in this case. I enjoyed the books, and this news doesn't really change that, but what I keep thinking about are the people who have addictions who have read the book, or know of him. It makes me wonder if some of those people will get discouraged or feel betrayed because of all the controversy.

So, you're upset that he's lying, but you were fine with all of the crimes he committed?
The Smoking Gun did an investigation that looked into anything that could be verified using public documents. So, like when he said he spent 3 months in jail...they said there's no documentation to support that.
I can totally understand that authors embellish actual facts for a work of fiction, but the thing is, in a lot of his interviews and appearances he went on and on about how it was a true story....

Re: A Million Little Pieces
i don't believe it... even if he DID embellish a little on the criminial charges, his book was NOT centered on that fact and the book was GREAT... i think they just wanna do this to make him look bad since they r thinking about makin a movie! I believe mr.frey!!!

Re: A Million Little Pieces
i believe the book is true..maybe he embellished, but i don't think he was out to decive oprah. i mean that takes a lot. i t would've been easier if he lied about losing a lot of weight or beating cancer

The part that no one could verify that he spent 3 months in jail pretty much clinched it for me that he probably made up a lot of it. I didn't see any of his interviews and I read the book long before he was on Oprah, so I didn't really hear him talking about it. Like I said, I did enjoy the book, and all of this doesn't really change that.
TSG did say that he shopped it around as a work of fiction and no one bought it, so he repackaged it and sold it as a memoir. I think the appeal of the book was that you would read it and think "wow! It is a miracle that this guy is still alive" And it made you think that if this guy was able to come back from the brink of disaster and probable death, other people can too. I think when people find out that it is all BS, they feel betrayed.

I agree with you. I've never actually read it...but it sounds interesting.
And actually, the controversey will probably sell more copies anyway!

i don't think she's fine with all of the crimes that he "committed"......i think she's more upset that he was lying about events that (possibly) never actually happened, and making a profit off of it.

To be honest, I've never read the book, I'm just playing devil's advocate because I think it's just a tad ironic that people in general (I don't mean to single out Jax) are upset that he may not have done all of the stuff he's said he's done...it's a bit twisted when you think about it.

i don't think it's twisted....but i'm looking at it differently in a sense that people may be upset - not b/c he never actually did any of the things he claims to have done - but moreso about him being deceitful, and totally fabricating his life story, for a purely monetary gain and/or notoriety.
then again, like that NEVER happens in Hollywood??

IMO- The reason why anyone would be upset is because he's been put on a pedestal by some. He's been so far the epitome of failure and renovation. Both mentally, physically & spiritually to soem point. In my case I read the book, loved the overall message of the book. I didn't take every little thing that happened in his life to heart. I feel the overall message I've gotten from the book is something that I have taken with me. I'm sure some things were or could have been embelished, but to me the fact remais that he was a drug addict, he beat all odds and is now a whole new person. An inspiration to many that have been in his shoes.

i never read the book either, but it does sound interesting.
have there been any reports as to what Oprah's reaction was to the news that he may have fabricated some of his life story??

Well Oprah did ask him about the whole root canal part of the book and he said he did go through it w/ no meds. Honestly I don't think she would even care.

Re: A Million Little Pieces
I saw this yesterday and I honestly couldn't figure out why it mattered. So what he exaggerated for artistic purposes. He's a writer that's what they tend to do. If you enjoyed the book then what does it really matter? Just because some elements may have been embellished doesn't mean that he didn't go through a dark and distructive period and come out alright.
