A mom sent her 2 year old special needs child on the bus without a diaper...

...He arrived at school soaking wet with poop all over the place (down his legs).

The assistant walked into the classroom holding this poor boys hand and annouced that his mom forgot to put on his diaper this morning.

I was getting Johnny situation in class and this poor boy is covered and the smell is horrible now in the room.

Has anyone ever forgotten to diaper their kid??? Especially before their day of school??

Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon That poor little boy. Fortunately at 2 they don't remember these things but aside from the parent's mistake I wish the assistant had taken the boy in to be cleaned privately. And that should have been a priority...he could get sick or make someone else sick.

I think the assistant who rode the bus with them was confused at first until she realized there was no diaper. She then was scrambling to find his diapers and extra clothing....

I just felt terrible for the little boy. I still don't get how you don't remember to put on a diaper!

Did the teacher have to do that? How traumatic for that poor child. Are children supposed to bring an extra change of clothing or extra diapers? Why couldn't she have helped the child to the bathroom to wash off? Could they have called the parents and brought him to the nurse or an office so the child could stay there before going to class. IMO it was handled so badly on all parts. I feel so badly for the child.

I am "hoping" that she has ALOT of kids and she was just mid boggled at the time or maybe he took it off himself without her knowing. I really couldnt speculate. My school here has MR/DD population and we see all types of situations like the one you mentioned daily. Since I do SW I make the phone calls and usually it is an honest mistake. Poor baby! How sad... but I don't know what the mother's situation was... Sometimes mistakes happen...

I have made some DOOZIES in the past which were a result of stress etc...

I don't think I ever forgot to put a diaper on him, because it became like second NATURE to me...

but still...

Re: A mom sent her 2 year old special needs child on the bus without a diaper...

I am not exactly sure of everything..

I drive Johnny to and from school..some of the kids take the bus and there are 2 assistants on each bus plus the driver.

I guess the mom of this little boy put him on the bus and all was ok..

When the assistants take the babies and toddlers off the bus, they get walked to their appropriate rooms..

When the assistant walked into the classroom she looked upset and told the teacher "Henrys mom forgot his diaper and he is a mess..".

I am not sure when it happened...whether it was on the bus or as they were walking into the class?? I do know the teacher and the aid were grabbing a fresh diaper/wipes and his clean pants and were going to bring him to the nurses room or bathroom (i'm not sure really??).

The teacher looked horrified that a diaper was forgotten. And no, the there was never a diaper put on him. Ugh.

And not that it makes it any better, but there was only johnny and one other kid in the room when this happened...I'm pretty sure they took care of it asap, everyone just looked confused!

Definitely not anywhere close to being trained.

I don't think the kids noticed at all. I'm sure he was ok once he was cleaned but i still felt terrible.

aww... that poor kid. I wouldn't judge the Mom though. I'm sure she has her hands full with a special needs child and throwing the smallest monkey wrench into her routine I'm sure totally throws her off.

I feel so bad for that poor kid. I cannot imagine forgetting to put a diaper on my son.

The assistant should have just taken him straight to the bathroom to get cleaned up.

ITA about cleaning him privately and not making a whole show out of it.
and I especially agree with not being so hard on the mom.
Her "mistake" could have been a much bigger one. It's not the end of the world. Who knows what her daily routines and responsibiltiies are. Chat Icon

Re: A mom sent her 2 year old special needs child on the bus without a diaper...

I was not trying to judge the mom....but I did ask how it is possible to forget the diaper, this is not a child with a mild disability. It is very severe and I was shocked that he was not wearing one.

She is prob going through a terrible time and has little support. I know I've done crazy things from being super tired. I just have not ever done that...it must have been a really trying morning for her.

believe me when I say my heart goes out to this woman...she has a lot on her plate. Chat Icon

I agree that it seems something impossible to forget, but in the grand scheme of things, it could have been something much worse than that.

Ive also forgotten many silly things or done things without thinknig (like dialing a phone # on my micro Chat Icon)
so not knowing her full story, it makes me kinda sad for her because Im sure she's overwhelmed. . Chat Icon

I know youre not judging, youre one of the most compassionate and caring ladies/mommies here.

My DH forgot to put a diaper on DD once when she was an infant. I only discovered that she was diaperless when I pulled her out of the Jumperoo because she wasn't smelling so nice. It wasn't a pretty picture. Chat Icon Lucky for my DH I was cracking up because I couldn't believe he did everything BUT put a diaper on her.

As others said, maybe she had a lot going on at home and was getting other kids ready for school. I can't tell you how many times I say to myself "I can't believe I forgot to do that" or "I can't believe I just did that." Chat Icon

If he wasn't potty trained already and is only 2, what does his being a special needs child have to do with it? If you're not PT'd, it's the same yucky results for any child, no?
Whatever the case, I would assume it was an oversight if he's not PT'd. Poor kid! I feel bad for him covered in poop and pee.

Poor kid Chat Icon Maybe he pulled his diaper off and the mom didn't realize it? It wouldn't be hard to do with shorts on. Of maybe she just forgot! It happens. The other day I took Emma's diaper off, put her shorts on and then realized I forgot to put the diaper on. Sometimes we just get so set in our routine, if we forget something, it doesn't register immediately.

You're right, I know the special needs issue doesn't relate since not being trained is the same for any kid.

I guess the only relevance was that this is a more severely debilitated child..a child who I can only imagine goes through a process to get ready everyday....I do completely understand forgetting things. I have done stupid things many many times. I guess in this case, it shocked me just because of the overall situation involved.

I think this line says it all. Maybe the mom had something happen and forgot that step, putting the diaper on him.

I don't think you were being judgmental, I just think there is probably another side to the story.Chat Icon

I confess. I DID infact, forget to put a diaper on DD once.

It happened so easily: Mommy of twins - both teething and up all night. Rushing to get to work for an early meeting. Feed both babies. Wash and dress DS, but he poops just as his diaper goes on, so use diaper meant for DD. Wash and start to dress DD - oops, no more diapers. Put her dress on her and go to get another diaper. Something distracts me. Look at clock - we're late. Put babies into infant seats, and head for the car.

It's not until we get to daycare and take DD out of her and wonder why he clothes are soaked that I remember she has no diaper!

Change her into spare clothes left at daycare - put a diaper ON this time. Go to work.

I never forgot again, but it could have happened sooooo times. If that's the worst thing I do as a Mommy - I'll be pretty successful!Chat Icon

My only guess would be she couldn't afford diapers, and was hoping he'd make it through the bus ride and get a diaper in school? Chat Icon
