A parent needing help!

What is the proper name for a class that is designated as having the "problem" or "bad" students?

We are talking public school, Long Island, Elementary.

I have a reason for asking, but just looking for this proper name

Re: A parent needing help!

There is no name for a class with "problem" or "bad" students.

The only designation is for students with special needs (IEPs, 504's etc). Those are sometimes classes with 2 teachers, one general education teacher and one special education teacher. They are commonly referred to as ICT classes (Integrated Co-Teaching).

But a class with a label for "bad"kids????
Never ever heard of anything like that and I have been an educator for 17 years.

Never heard of a classroom like that either. I have seen something called a "Save Room" which is a temporary placement for students who have behavior problems.

Re: A parent needing help!

Thanks for the response. I wasn't sure how to word my question.

I may be making too much of this (I'm really trying not to) but I am concerned with DS' 3rd grade teacher assignment this year. In my network of friends in Cub Scouts and sports, I have not found 1 kid in his class. I posted on FB looking for feedback - only 1 response from someone who had her ~15 years ago (teacher had been in district for ~25 yrs).

DH ran into another mom (her son is in 4th) and she knows of the teacher & said its the "difficult kid" class. Als, another mom (who's son had this teacher last year) had nothing good to say and says her son "can be difficult and is never happy"

There is more to this and I'm trying to stay level headed. I was condemned with DS' grades last year and showed some signs of ADD/ADHD and issues with attention. Went thru the process of having eval done at school & at CSE mtg his teacher said " I wouldn't have brought it to this level" and Special Ed person said "if anything comes up in the future, keep it on a school level. Talk to the principal". End result of CSE was no services.

I'm not sure how to find out more info & why DS was placed in this class.

No two parents will ever have the same experience with a teacher. Teachers also change over the year. There are inclusion classes that have students will disabilities and students without. Some parents like this model because there are more people to assist all the students so that they all get more support. If you are concerned about the class, try to talk to the teacher about your concerns about your child for the year. The teacher may be very thankful to hear what you want to focus on this year. Also, while it is your child and you have heard negative things about the teacher, try to keep an open mind. Again, no two people have the same experience with much.

When we did classroom assignments in our building, we had to have a balance of kids in each class. A teacher could not have two many high achieving or low achieving students, too many behavior problems, too many kids getting pulled out for too many services, too many boys or girls....it all had to balance out.

We had teachers that would often get the difficult kids because they were the ones who could keep them in line and wouldn't let them get away with anything. But it wasn't the entire class.

You spoke with two people out of the hundreds of students this person has had. I don't think that's a good gauge of a teacher. If you are concerned about any issues with attention, write the teacher a note early, explained what happened last year, ask them to communicate if they notice anything.

Re: A parent needing help!

Thank you all for the responses.

I was confident that there was not 1 class full of children who are troublesome.

I did send the teacher an email earlier this week introducing us and letting her know that I would like to talk with her about my son.

She responded with
"Every year is a fresh start. Third grade is more difficult than second grade and there is more expected of the children. I would be happy to meet with you after school starts to see how things are going."

There are smaller class sizes like a 12:1:1 that can be for kids that have behavioral problems.

A 12:1:1 or any other small group classes recommended by a Committee on Special Education are NOT for kids with behavior issues. They are for students with disabilities.
