As a parent, what is ...

... one thing you want to do like your parents did.

And one you thing you want to do differently from your parents.

I grew up with a lot of love in my family. We were always hugging and kissing and we said we loved each other at least once a day. I definitely want to do that.

My mom had a lot of her own insecurities about fitting into our neighborhood (she was from another country, a little older than some of the other moms, etc...) and my sister and I picked up on it. I have gotten rid of my insecurities about "fitting in" and know that I belong whereever I am, and so do my kids!

ETA: spelling corrections

Re: As a parent, what is ...

One thing i would do that my parents did

Have open family conversations-We talked about everything, no topic was off limits. Also we were taught no problem goes away on it's own, it needs to be talked about and worked out

ONe thing I don't want to do

Is turn my daughter into a free maid service, laundry person, and personal cook. (Yep that was me!) AND soo not keep my son on his high horse at all times and he can do no wrong! Different set of rules always applied to my brother.
(Can you tell I grew up in a very italian familyChat Icon )

I grew up with a very affectionate father, I want to be the same veyr open and affectionate and supportive while still being a parent.

What do I want to differently: not get divorced! I wish we had known extended family better....I feel so alone sometimes when everyone talks about their families getting together

I'm not pregnant but when we do have kids, I want to continue something DH's family did.

He came from a large family and every night after dinner, they would put on some music and dance together. I think that is so cute!

What I wouldn't want to do - judge my children based on flaws I see in myself. My mother could be very critical of my physical appearance when I was a child and it has affected me my entire life. I don't want to make my children ever feel that way!

My father made Christmas magic. I actually believed in Santa till I was 14Chat Icon because of him. I want to give Damien the same types of Christmas's. We are also very affectionate, my parents always had tons of hugs and kisses for us and lots of I love you's.

On the other hand my father wa very strict. I don't want to be like that with Damien.

Re: As a parent, what is ...

We want to bring our kids up with a rich culture and expose them to many different ethnicities and cultural traditions as possible.

We also want to encourage our kid/s to achieve, realizing there's always room to improve. We have to be careful not to push too hard...but humbleness is critical. We push ourselves very hard (working 60-80+h/week each but that'll change with kids) so it'll be something the grandparents will have to keep an eye on!

Differently - my and DHs parents did not act like they were in love. We are going to be very affectionate and say I love you often.

We also want to travel with kid/s in tow - our parents left us behind. It would go along with the multicultural theme. You gotta see rome to appreciate the romans!

And our parents did not encourage speaking another language even though there were three different primary languages between our parents. But we feel being multilingual is very important.
