A poem for those who have lost a pet or are struggling with the decision
This was put together by some people on a horse-related message board I frequent. It's hard to explain the title, as it's sort of an inside saying to horsepeople on that board... It was written to honor horses that passed away, but the entire thing is applicable to any pet.
I looked this up because a good friend is struggling with this very difficult decision for her horse, whom she has owned for 25 years.
It makes me cry every time I read it, but it also gives me peace. I thought I might share it here, in case anyone else is struggling with the loss of a beloved pet.
I couldn't even type this without crying, but it is so beautiful I had to share. I've been crying for 2 days for my friend and beloved companion, so the tears are coming easily these days.
"This it be Right" by Sarah Young
Better a week too soon, than a moment too late, they say. Better while the eyes still sparkle, than wait 'til they dull. Better while the good days outnumber the bad. Better when it's hard for us, than hard for them. It will never be easy for us. As stewards of these great creatures, We have the opportunity to give one final gift - Peace. We grant them peace in lieu of our own But granting peace, the end, when we wish for more Eventually becomes a gift to ourselves Knowing that we gave a final gift to one we cherished Knowing it will leave an empty spot in our hearts Doing it anyway Because we DO love That is what makes us human For the love of my horse, I know who I am And I know love.

such a sweet poem..
we had a cat that we were taking care of for a while, and we returned him back to his owners when they got a bigger place.. within two weeks, he was gone.. it was one of the most devstating moments on my life, I will never forget the pain and anguish I felt.

We're going through this now. Darwin is failing quickly (he's 15+ years old), and we're figuring out what is the most humane thing to do... We don't think he'll see Halloween....
This puts a nice perspective on it.

Re: A poem for those who have lost a pet or are struggling with the decision
Thank you, Kara!! I really needed to see this today, as my ex-h had to put our beloved cat, Squiggy, to sleep yesterday . The vet said it was a matter of days. He was closing in on 20 years. We didn't want him to suffer at all and felt that he should go peacefully, without suffering and with someone who loved him by his side. He lived a happy and long life. We are heartbroken, but know in our hearts we did the right thing.
