A question about DSLR/SLR cameras, perhaps a silly one....

If you have lenses from a regular film SLR camera, and got a digital SLR camera by the same brand....

would the lenses work on both cameras?

I'm thinking probably not, and it's probably a silly question...

But we inherited my late MIL's SLR along with 3 lenses, and I really want a DSLR but wouldn't be able to afford different lenses right away.

I believe it will work.

I remember being told this by someone, when I bought a different brand DSLR as my SLR camera.

If you have both in your possession, it can't hurt to try.

I only have the film-slr camera. I wanted a D40 for my birthday but DH thinks I'm crazy.....it'll probably be a while before I get it but if it worked.....it might help me to convince DH that I need to buy one!

Depends on the type of lens you have. It's worth it to write down the type of lens & go to a camera store to ask.

The lens I used to shoot with all of the time (the ones from when Emily was a babyChat Icon ) is from my old SLR & fits on my DSLR. Works fine.

I actually believe the D40 is one of the Nikon D series that does NOT accept the regular F mount lenses from the Nikon film SLRs. The D80 does (which was a HUGE factor in me choosing the D80 over the less expensive models)

ETA: The lenses will work in terms of metering, but autofocus will not work since there is no autofocus motor in the lens mount. you will need lenses that have their own AF motors. HTH
