A question about "paternity leave"-DOE

My husband is a teacher and he spoke with someone with the DOE yesterday that told him that there's no such thing as paternity leave (which we assumed). She said that the average time a dad will take off is about 3 days (and those will count as personal days-sick time is not allowed since he is not sick) and that it's up to the principal to approve whatever you ask for. I was just wondering what usually happens in your schools. DH's principal is really cool with him and he never ever takes time off, so we were just wondering what is the "average" time taken off for a new dad.
TIA

Re: A question about "paternity leave"-DOE

I worked for the DOE and my DH is a teacher on LI. He took two weeks.

DH took two weeks, but his district offers different kinds of sick days. (He took a few "family illness" days, personal days, and sick days). He lined up a sub and had his lessons ready to go. His AP knew I was pregnant and was absolutely fine with DH taking off, but he's a reasonable human being. If your DH works for a nut, you may have a problem.

I'd have your DH speak with his union rep and figure out his options.

Men in my building take two weeks. They must use sick time for the absences, which technically is not allowed but the administrators do not make it an issue.

It's a FMLA leave to take care of a child......call HR connect directly...ask to speak to the leave unit. They will advise you.....don't listen to hear say....

it's in the contract. DH would be entitled to 12 weeks of FMLA.

If you and DH were both NYC teachers you would have to split FMLA you couldn't each take the 12 weeks..

I believe I heard you could both take FMLA but the not at the same time... And if your husband took it after your 12 weeks I don't believe he'd be paid for any of his 12 weeks but I could be wrong on that?

Other than taking FMLA I think he can use personal days. I'd call and find out for sure in your particular situation

This is true. Both dH and I are nycdoe teachers. I gave birth Feb 26 and took FMLA up to May 23. He took his FMLA then until the end of the school year. HTH!
