Re: a question about people who say "aksed"

It's not an accent, it is lack of culture/breeding/class in my book.
Oh my!
I'm guilty of it, not even aware that I do it most of the time. I'm sure there are other words I mispronounce. I have no idea where I got it from? Maybe it is laziness, maybe I heard it growing up and it stuck on me? I don't know.....I certainly don't recall teachers correcting me about it. Go figure....
Also, even though I've been in NC for a year now, it will take YEARS before I lose the yankee accent and start pronouncing the "R's" at the ends of words (mother, father, sister, etc). If people want to think I have poor breeding and am low-class, so be it.

Re: a question about people who say "aksed"
I think there can be any number of reasons why words are pronounced differently. Some words are difficult to say, some have to do with envrionment - how you learned to say it.
There is a guy at my office who says "tree" instead of three - I always thought it was a joke and then found out it is a regional thing, the area he grew up people said 'tree'
I say Aunt with a long 'a' instead of saying "ant", people at my office make fun of me all the time for it

Re: a question about people who say "aksed"
idk, I don't think it has anything to do with your environment. my mil constantly says "youse" and dh has never ever once said it.
i would think that if you heard it growing up you would speak the same way.

I use slang (of course) and I can slip into a Texan draw pretty easily.
BTW, it's a "drawl", not a "draw"

I'm from Brooklyn, and although I do not pronounce it "axed", I do hear a lot of old-school Brooklynites pronounce it that way. I don't think it's a cultural or race thing. I just think it's a lazy-tongue thing.
ITA. It's definitely not a race thing. It's a local accent type thing. Growing up (in Bensonhurst) I was one of the ONLY kids in my class who did not say "axe" because my mom and my grandmother would have FREAKED. I still remember the day I pronounced "chocolate" "chalk-late."
My very educated, professional step-mother says "axed" as do most of her brothers and her sister. They're from Queens.

It's not an accent, it is lack of culture/breeding/class in my book. It is a huge turn off for me to hear a person use AKS instead of ASK.
Sorry to go on, it is just a big pet peeve of mine!
im sorry, but i think this post is a lack of culture/breeding/class...
in the words of michelle tanner...HOW RUDE!!!

Re: a question about people who say "aksed"
I don't know. I have a friend who's really intelligent, well educated and was brought up 'properly' - the only word that I've heard her mispronounce in the years that I've known her is 'aksed.'
It's how she says it; she used to try to correct herself all of the time but has given up. I don't judge her for it.

Re: a question about people who say "aksed"
A friend from college says aksed as well as "Sore" for "saw". It goes through me, especially "sore" but I deal with it.
She is intelligent, funny, witty etc..i believe it to be just an accent think (NY of course). I know I pronounce things funny sometimes if I'm speaking quickly...I try to be aware of it, but well, it is how I've always spoken!

I used to say "asked" incorrectly. I didn't even realize it until I went away to college and it was pointed out to me that I was saying "axed". So I made myself more aware of it and worked on my speech, now I can say it properly. Sometimes it's just a matter of slowing down!!
ITA its just how i say it when i don think about it!!!

Re: a question about people who say "aksed"
i have some words i do this to- i can say it correctly but choose not to (of course this is only when i'm home with family):
brefast patmark recycable
hehe, it makes me laugh when i say it. I think it started cause my bro (who is challenged) pronounced them the wrong way and it just caught on... DH hates it!
