A reminder to check your bank accounts on the regular.
A couple months back, my debit card number was used fradulently.
Within the past two weeks, I know of SEVEN PEOPLE whose debit card numbers have been used fradulently. All of these people bank at different banks in the NY/NJ area. All of their cards have been used - SWIPED - in different parts of the country.
DH just checked his account this afternoon and lo and behold, over the weekend there is a total of $3,000 in 'pending transactions'. He called the bank to talk to them (what has me livid is that they didn't even call him to notify him - $3K isn't exactly chump change!) and he decided to go in person to speak with them. They said that within the past hour alone, two other customers have come in because of fradulent withdrawals/debit useage.
So just a reminder...check your account daily...this stuff is scary and a royal PITA to deal with!

Mine was TD (a couple months back.)
DH's was Capital One.
The other people I know were Chase, Bank of America and Wells Fargo.
Aside from mine, everyone else that I wrote about in the OP had issues of fraud in the past two weeks. It's probably a coincidence...it's just so weird that seven people I know are dealing with the same kind of fraud activity in their accounts through different banks and all within the past couple of weeks.

Ugh. This happened to my dh too. It wasn't a huge amount of money, bu still so frustrating. I do t get how the cards are swiped!

This happened to me in January. It was a bunch of online purchases including porn. I check my account daily now because of it.

It really sucks! I was told by someone in the fraud department at the police department a lot of the time it's gand station attendants (when they go inside to swipe your card, not at the pump) and from online shopping. She told me never use a debit card online, just credit cards because they aren't as well protected, and it's more of a hassle to get money back from the banks than the cc companies. The credit card companies can take the charges off right away but with the banks it takes longer. Once your money is gone, it's gone. And if you have bills to pay you are screwed it can be a week or longer before you see any of your money. Just some helpful advice I thought I would pass on

Then I realized the down payment on our house came out.

Chase bank has a feature that lets you set an alert on your checking acct. It will e-mail you if a transaction over your chosen amount takes place. You can have an e-mail sent to multiple accounts and you can set the trigger amount for whatever you want.

Happened to my mom TWICE. And both times it happened after using her debit card at the diner. The management dealt with it and it turned out to be one employee who was then fired!
It's sad when this happens ESPECIALLY to people like my mother who don't have a savings account and no additional money to fall back on should something happen. The money eventually refunded both times, but it took at least 5 days...

DH had is idetity stolen. How we found out... When we went to file our taxes someone already filed under his ss #.
Thankfully we owe money this year and aren't expected to get money back. He spent the entire day on the phone. Had to get the cops involved. Not fun

I cant believe you posted this bc it happened to me last tues. I check my acct everyday and thank god I do bc there were 4 pending transactions!!! totaling about 500 bucks all together!!

Another reason I'm so glad that DH and I never use debit cards, only cash or credit cards. We have both had incidents of credit card fraud, but those were resolved quickly and new cards were issued.

I have Citi as well, they take care of it quickly and they notify us.
Still I always check. A couple of years ago I noticed $1 for AOL coming out. I did some research and it had happed for 3months in a row. But it was so small. I dont have AOL. I had it once. But I had a different name, address and bank then. So I called up Citi, they refunded the $4. Then found out two other customers had an issue too. It seems it was a scam. They'd take small amounts for a long while to set up habit of acceptance. Then WHAM, huge amount. I googled it and found out more.
I really love Citibank!

OMG! I was going to post a PSA about this! I discovered transactions in my checking account on Friday that are definitely not mine. Already filed a fraud report with the bank and canceled my debit card.

Same here. This happened to us last year and they charged about 750.00 worth of stuff- all on the same day from Germany, to Brazil, to California. It's so crazy how they can do this.
Just yesterday I got a letter from one of our cards, that the system was compromised as well as all our info, that we should monitor the account for unauthorized charges.
