I like the Shark. You can use it on carpet/area rugs also.

We have the Bissell Flip-It (from wet to dry) and it works great on hardwood floors...only $80

For spot cleaning, I use the "one sweep" -it's great! I got it at Linens and Things for $10 several years ago - it's great on pet hair and dust.
To go from floors to carpets to upholstery to furniture - we have this Kenmore canister vacuum. I wish I had bought it a long time ago...
