a VERY sad day on the farm....
you may remember that I mentioned Olivia the chicken was not doing well around the time Sunny had her babies. She became really ill the last few days and I was trying to find a vet to euthanize her because we felt she might be in pain. Well today my sweet girl Olivia passed away on her own while we were at work. She was one of our original girls in our flock and she was the first one to lay an egg. She laid big beautiful brown eggs with speckles almost every single day. She was at the bottom of the pecking order, often got bullied by the other girls and truly liked me, DH & our dog better than them. She loved cheese as a snack and would jump in the air for a piece. Everytime we raked or dug a hole she was right there under our feet looking for worms or other treasures. Rest in peace sweet girl That picture is of her in the nest right at the time she layed her first egg.
Tonight we cried, laughed, looked at pictures and realized we will never forget her.
on a good note, the babies are growing up fast & tomorrow I will upload my newest pics & post them.

I am so sorry Kelly. I hope your beautiful girl rests in peace. You gave her a great life, and that counts for a lot. She will probably make a good guardian angel considering she's already got the wings.

Re: a VERY sad day on the farm....
Thank you so much everyone Even though the big girls are only 3.5 years old, its sort of old for a chicken. My poor hubby buried her under my dogwood tree last night in the dark while I held the flashlight It was so sad
And the action around here never ends, this morning around 7:30 I was getting ready for work and I heard the "chicken alarm" which is the big girls way of saying either-something's wrong, I laid an egg-come & see, I think the wind is blowing a different direction or a million other things, but this time a few of them were all sounding the alarm together "bawk, bawk, bawKAWK" We call it the chicken duet or chicken symphony, which always means there is a bigger problem. Anyway Jack started barking and ran outside to see what was up, I did too. All of the big girls, including Sunny were totally spooked, necks straight up in the air, sounding the alarm from under the bushes along the property line. I could not find the babies and I was starting to panic. I started to head over to the coop to see if I could find the babies, usually they are easy to find because they "peep" all day, but they were SILENT. Suddenly I noticed tiny Farrah running toward me by herself and just as I looked to see what was happening the Osprey that lives around our lake swooped down to catch her but thank god I spooked him and he flew away while she ran for cover under Mr Buns' new house! This magnificent bird of prey was on the ground less than 3 feet from me! Then he flew up to a branch in the neighbors tree and watched as I tried to find the other babies. Luckily everyone was hiding under the deck! I love the osprey and I enjoy watching him hunt over the lake, its amazing. Unfortunately my worst fear is that I would have a daylight predator to deal with. So immediately I realized the big girls saw him and that's why they were flipping out! DH is coming home early today to create a mesh/wire cover for the run & we will keep the entire flock in the run unless we are outside with them. Never a dull moment!

WOW I never even thought of that!! The babies learned a great lesson today. I'm so glad you have a backup plan for them! You're such great parents.
