ABN-AMRO Mortgage Customers!!!
Did you know - that last month, a computer tape containing information about you and your mortgage account was lost while being transported by DHL courier service!!!! 
Information including your name, account number, payment history, AND SS#'s - was all on that tape!!!
and get this - this affects 2 MILLION customer accounts!!!! 
i'm so friggin mad i could choke someone right now!!!!!!!!!!!!!
(i'm going to post this on the home board too!!!)

I know, we just got the letter today.
The weird thing is that earlier this month we got a really weird call about an online mortgage application from some other company and DH said it must've just been a wrong number. I'll have to have him check his credit report as soon as he gets home, mine looks ok.

GET OUT! I just got a letter from them right now - I will go and open it.
What does this mean for us? That someone has all of our information? How could that happen???

Most large companies do a full back up their databases monthly and have them stored offsite. This has happened a few times this year with other financial institutions.
I don't understand why they don't ENCRYPT the data before it's sent out. They can create a black box program to run it though to encrypt and decrypt if they really needed to get the data back on their mainframe. IMO it's so irresponsible to send data out that could be compromised by a 3rd party so easily.

you KNOW i called them right away!!!
I wanted to know WHEN? and how many customers this affected!!??
NOVEMBER - and the tape contained info with 2 MILLION accounts!!!!!!!!!!!!

the tape was being shipped to Experian for the purpose of:
"to routinely provide this information to credit reporting companies to ensure your credit record is up to date"
OK GREAT! now our information is at risk, and we can possibly be victims of identify theft!! some assurance that is!!!!!!!!!!

not only that - but to offer free enrollment in a credit monitoring program for 90 DAYS is simply unacceptable!!!
how about monitoring my credit for the LIFE OF THE LOAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

They really need to find a better way to move this kind of data around. It's insane how easy it is for people to get your SS# these days. There was a scam going on earlier this year where people steal babies SS# somehow and open false accounts in the baby's name. Nobody thinks to check their baby's credit report, why would a 1 year old have a credit card? Now I have to monitor Sarah's credit report on top of my own. Rediculous!

DH and I are both writing to Sen. Clinton and Sen. Schumer that they need to do something to address this. It has happened too many times for it to go on. My ILs banking and personal information was lost by a courier earlier this summer.
If anyone else wants to write to see if they can start some kind of legislation to require that SS# is better protected, here are their websites. Schumer is usually pretty good about personal protection issues, so hopefully they can do something about this before it happens to someone else.
