Abnormal Pap Smear
My dr did a pap smear on me and it came back abnormal...my last one was about 1.5 years ago and it also came back abnormal and I was diagnosed with HPV.
My dr. at the time said that it's not a big deal and would go away. Now it seems that it hasn't.
I have a full pregnancy workup next Thursday and I have to go in earlier now and get a colpopscopy. I've had one before and it really really hurt so I am not looking forward to it, but hopefully seeing the little heartbeat will make it better.
I am so nervous. Has something been inside me all this time that is harmful? Is the baby at risk?
I know that all these questions are going to have to be answered by my doctor, but I am just wondering if anyone has any experience with this?

Re: Abnormal Pap Smear
i had an abnormal pap at my first appointment and i had to have a colposcopy as well. it hurt so much but thankfully, nothing was wrong.
my dr told me that if they found any abnormal cells, they would monitor me and do another colposcopy at 28 weeks to make sure it hadn't spread too much, and go from there.
good luck

Re: Abnormal Pap Smear
Hi!!! I also had an abnormal result, did the colpo, and they DO want to "zap" a few cells, but that has to wait until after gets here!!! Its definitely not harmful to the baby, my doc reassured me!!! But they can't do the procedure on the cervix during PG, that could be a problem!! So I'll go get a followup after delivery and before heading back to work, but they definitely sounded like it was completely manageable!!! Don't worry I'm sure yours is similar!!!

I had abnormal paps and was diagnosed with HPV, my doctor monitored it for a year and finally when it didnt go away he did a LEEP procedure to remove the cells, (they can eventually possibly turn into Cervical Cancer) since I have had normal paps!!! Just keep an eye on it and go for yearly check ups, I hope everything is ok, good luck

Re: Abnormal Pap Smear
I haven't had an abnormal pap since I've been pregnant so I have no experience there. But, I did have an abnormal pap and was diagnosed with HVP about 4years ago. My dr didn't want to take any chances and scheduled me for a LEEP 6months later.
I'm not really much help to you but just definitely make sure they monitor it and get it taken care of after DC is born. You don't want to put yourself at risk of cervical cancer.
Good Luck!

Re: Abnormal Pap Smear
I was diagnoised with HPV years ago. I had cyrotherapy to remove the cells (and pretty much the tip of my cervix)
I was in Texas then and even there they said it takes years to really clear out of your system.... I came here and heard the same.
10yrs was the guide they gave me.
For two years I had to see the doc every 3-6months for check up/follow up paps. It did clear and I was told I had lost approximately a 20% of getting preggo from my procedure. Well Im preggo so I guess its ok. Other than 'getting pregnant' there were no side affects. I never had to have a colonoscopy for this though
PS: Yes, its been over 10yrs for me (im old) That and I got this surprise relatively young. So things may have changed a bit!
Good Luck
ETA: sorry I also realized mine actually turned cancerous so maybe that's why mine situtation was different?

She has to have a colposcopy, not colonoscopy. It's to check the severity of the affected cells.
Don't worry!! I had to have 2 LEEPS actually but haven't had any abnormal paps since. I don't have any experience with going through this while pregnant, but I'm sure your doc will take care of you!

Thanks so much for the info! Last year when I had it done the cells were not cancerous and the doctor said they would just go away and that even if I were to get pregnant, sometimes the act of labor actually removes the cells and not to worry.
I'm just hoping and praying that since the cells didn't go away that they haven't evolved into something cancerous...
