Re: Abolishing the suburbs
i tried to find what you are talking about the only thing i found is the proposal to allow single family homes be converted to allow rentals in it.
if thats the case isnt most of LI rentals do this just illegally now?
also about having more affordable housing? if thats the case I am all for it. the prices for renting is ridiculous!
if this is not what you are talking about can you share a link please

Abolishing the suburbs
I had heard that this was a possibility awhile ago but I haven't heard anything since.

This seems like a proposal, not definite?
But overall the phrase “abolishing the suburbs” is a political catch phrase, not really as simple as the words.. much like the phrase “defund the police”.
Affordable housing on LI just doesn’t happen. It starts out that way - the term “affordable” is always sweetly added and thrown around and used by politicians but what happens is builders swoop in, shake hands and get tax abatements for 20 years, break ground, and suddenly 99% of their units are over $3200 for a measly two bedroom. To start.
Long term, LI is designed for the wealthy. Not the middle class or even the upper middle class.

I am stilling missing the abolish part. Is it because they want adorable rent? Because they want to allow for 2 family housing which again most people do now but just illegally?

Re: Abolishing the suburbs
Okay so California has a proposed law to say no new single family developments. All new properties must be multi family dwellings. In NJ there are the Abbot and Mount Laurel decisions which state your towns must build affordable housing every few years. Depending upon how many built determine if it is 5-10-15 years. Then they will say x number can be one bedroom, y two bedroom and z three bedroom. The answer is 150 total units with only 10 of those being three bedroom. The majority are one bedroom. It cannot be senior housing, but it can be military preferred. Since my town has a VA hospital, they are building it very close to the VA and are giving it to wounded veterans.

My problem with this is overcrowding. Especially on a place like Long Island. We are already overwhelmed with traffic. It has gotten worse and worse every year. Already I notice they aren't building homes anymore, but apartment and condo complexes. While I have no problem with that, what it does is cram 1000s of people in to a spot where if you'd have built single family homes you'd have a lot less people. And that just means more cars on the already overcrowded outdated roadways. If you are going to do this, it needs to be in an area with better /more roadways and a good public transportation system. Like a city. Certainly not a place like LI.

Abolishing the suburbs
I think what everyone forgets though is our proximity to the city. Lots of people are willing to commute, especially young people with high paying city jobs. I know of an eastern town on LI in Suffolk that had had substantial build lately. Condos, apartments. Residents complain and say there’s no point becsuse they will be vacant, because who can afford $3500 for an apt? Well, they are always leased well before even entirely built. And waiting lists.
Its hard for me to wrap my head around too.

You should see what they are doing in Riverhead. Multi story apartment buildings going up everywhere. Every single one needs a variance. It's starting to look more like Queens than a rural downtown area. The schools are already ridiculously overcrowded, but let's build more apartments. The apartments are nice, sort of like a hotel, but the insides already smell like marijuana so if you live there and don't like the smell of marijuana too bad. They have totally ruined that area in my opinion...

Re: Abolishing the suburbs
What concerns me
Rezone the Town so that no parcel of land larger than two acres is zoned for single-family homes. If future golf courses, farms or other large parcels become available, a denser development should be required
Take the lead in explaining to its citizens why the Mediavilla property, currently zoned for singlefamily housing, should be rezoned to include affordable housing. It is located on a high-capacity road which could handle the traffic. The Town needs to be especially bold, since residents have turned out to oppose everything that has ever been proposed for the property.

Sounds like patchogue. I refuse to go because driving around trying to find parking during peak times is beyond frustrating. They overbuilt and there’s not enough parking. It literally looks like the city now.

Abolishing the suburbs
I just read in a local Facebook group about a bill allowing accessory apartments in single family neighborhoods. So basically everyone can add an apartment in their home.

The thing about Patchogue though is there's more to do. There is good restaurants and night life. Downtown Riverhead was up and coming but for every restaurant or shop that opens up, another closes. It stinks because it's a gorgeous area on the Riverfront with attractions like the aquarium but after dark it's a scary place to be...

Yes let's ban suburbs. And rocks. And all quadrupeds. It just makes sense. I know congress has been wrestling these issues for years.
