? about IUIs and medication
Is there really a big difference in stats with IUI unmedicated and just having intercourse? What is the deciding factor? Is the sperm prepped, the eggs are ready? Can someone shed sone light on this?
TIA!

Re: ? about IUIs and medication
No, there really is no significant statistical difference. Unmedicated IUI's are usually the course of treatment for a couple that simply cannot, or will have extreme difficulty with getting pregnant naturally. For example, a couple who has a hostile CM issue (like myself), having an unmedicated IUI presents a solution because it bypasses the CM as a factor in getting pregnant. Similarly, if there is a male factor involved, having the IUI helps in many ways.

Re: ? about IUIs and medication
I'm not sure exactly - you'll have to ask the MF girls. I know one factor is that they place the specimen right into the cervix, so the little men don't have to travel as far, which is obviously helpful if there are number or motility issues.
They also "wash" the sperm - I know everytime they do that, it brings the count and motility up for us. Somehow the washing process makes the sample better, if that makes sense at all.

Re: ? about IUIs and medication
ok, I get it.
So the environment is better and so are the swimmers. I guess they also time it perfectly?
What does the medication do in that case?

Re: ? about IUIs and medication
In my case, meds were prescribed to help produce more eggs so that our chances were increased.

what was the med? Does that med help the egg quality too?
Sorry for the dumb questions.

Re: ? about IUIs and medication
Well, the nuts and bolts of prescribing meds, even if a woman ovulates on her own, is to basically give you more moving targets, and better quality targets. Depending on the amount of your dose, you'll produce more than one egg, which increases your chances statistically. And, studies show that Clomid and other fertility drugs also increase the quality of the egg.
What I do know is that my RE told me that, when you do an IUI with medication, the chances increase significantly from something like 10% to 30%. If done for three cycles, your chances, with IUI and meds, increase to 45%. Don't ask me the basis - I have no idea, I just take what she says and go with it.
But, with that said, of course, with any fertility medication you use, there are risks, like multiples and other complications.
I used Clomid last cycle and it was a total bust. My body responded totally whacky in a way my RE has never seen, and the cycle turned out to be dysfunctional, so these meds aren't necessarily a cure-all.

I'm no expert, but I think your RE's percentages are off regarding IUI's. With IVF I only have a 45% chance of it working. We were told, even with Clomid, our chances at IUI were at best 15%. Your chances do increase with each IUI, but I think those percentages are rather high.

VERY possible - I wasn't quite paying attention when she started talking about Meds. What I took from the convo though, is that using meds does increase your chances significantly when doing an IUI, as compared to an unmedicated IUI.

I was told with meds the chance of an IUI working is 20%.

Re: ? about IUIs and medication
this just makes me think. I'm 41, supposedly everything is working right for us physically..(we'll see)..what are the chances that I could conceive on my own..
2) with an unmedicated IUI 3) with a medicated IUI 4) IVF (some type of protocol)
assuming that systems are a go what are my real chances or stats?

Re: ? about IUIs and medication
This is a common progression of treatments with no identified IF problems:
1) unmedicated IUI 2) clomid/IUI 3) injectables/IUI 4) IVF
You can do each type of treatment as long as you want. Many RE's will recommend 3 tries of each.

Actually, 3 times of any treatment is usually enough to see if it is going to work for you before moving on to something else. This is based upon statistics and success rates.
