HOw long can you leave a new puppy home for while you are at work? We would like to get a dog but we work pretty long hours.

Re: ? about leaving a puppy home while at work...
Dh and I work a lot of hours also. When we decided to get a puppy, we knew we would need to get one that was not a "toy" breed as they say. Smaller dogs need to eat every couple of hours or they can get sick.
Bella was 9-weeks old when we got her and 3 pounds. We would leave the house at 7:30am and come back for lunch around 12:30 and then home by 6 the latest.
At first, you def need to change your lifestyle, but it get's much easier as they get older. Bella is now 7 months and I very rarely go home at lunch anymore to check on her. She never has an accident and has learned to hold it in till we get home.
I would say the first few months, I would not go more then 4 hours without someone checking on the dog.
Good luck!

Re: ? about leaving a puppy home while at work...
My husband and I got a Bullmastiff puppy in January of 2007 and he was 8 weeks old. At the time, I worked in Westchester, we live in Suffolk County, and Brody was crated from around 7 am until 1-2 pm until my job out here came through. He did fine, he slept alot, which moast puppies do. I work out here now, and Brody is still crated, from 9-2. For this reason, we only crated him overnight for the first month or so that we had him so as not to over-crate. After that, we put his bed in our room and he slept there overnight. Now he sleeps in our bed which is another story...LOL But, what are your hours like?

If you work long hours, would you consider getting a dog that is slightly older?
We are lucky in that our dog is only crated for long periods of the time about once a week. Other than that, 4-5hrs tops! At night, he sleeps in our bed.

Re: ? about leaving a puppy home while at work...
When we got Porter, he was 5 months old. He was crated from 8:30am til around 5:30 - 6:00 when we got home. He went to the bathroom in the cage twice and then after that he held it all day. Now he is over a year old and he is on his own from 7:30 til 6:00. He loves his crate, i call it his Co-op cuz after he was trained we got him a huge one to stay in, so he just goes in there without me telling him too as soon as he sees me grab my keys.

Re: ? about leaving a puppy home while at work...
Well it looks like getting a dog won't be possible. I am gone for 10-12 hours from Sunday to Friday. DH is at least the same if not more. It is too long to leave a puppy or dog. i tired to explain this to DH but he didn't get it. So i figured i would ask the LIF crew. Thanks.

When Katie was a puppy this she was alone from 8:45-12:15 and then 12:45 to 5:15
10-12 hours sounsd like a lot without doggie day care.

Unfortunately, I have to agree that it might not be the best idea. That is a long time for a dog to be alone and by the looks of it, the dog would really only get human attention for a few hours a day since you guys work so much.
It's so much work at first with a puppy.
Did you ever consider adopting an older dog and not a puppy? Maybe this would be a better option for you.

I would most definitely say with schedules like that you guys are not very good candidates for a dog at all.
Dogs need A LOT of human contact, excercise and general interaction with other humans and dogs. They need to be socialized otherwise you will run into a lot of problems.
I think at this point in your lives and careers you should hold off on getting a dog. When your work schedules slow down a bit and you can dedicate more time for a pet, then revisit it.

Honestly, an older dog wouldn't be any better. They still need attention and with a 10-12 hour work day schedule, that's just not fair to the dog.
ETA: If anything these are the dogs who've come from shelters where they weren't getting very much attention. And most likely went into the shelter b/c the family who had them to begin with couldn't give them the attention they required.
Like I said in my above post, when your schedules calm down, then consider a puppy or dog.
