Acne.... what do you use?Update with 'nother ?

I've HAD it...... I was on a prescription medication that I cannot take now that I'm PG. What OTC stuff do you all use that has been "approved" for use in PG ladies....

My face is a MESS...

Thanks for your suggestions

That's funny, this is my exact situation too. Used the Proactiv zit cream, the Dr. said not to use it anymore, and so I've been trying to just use toothpaste to dry out the big pimples. Then someone asked me if the Dr. said that was safe--it's toothpaste!! I never asked, but I assume it's ok.

My skin looks like I have chicken pox,and I usually have really good skin. Chat Icon

I wonder why your dr. said not to use ProActiv. My dr. said it was more than ok. I dont use it daily, but I did go through a horrible skin period and used it alot. Did they give you a reason why? My dr. said to stay away from salycic acid and accutane, neither of which ProActiv contains.

My doctor also will not let me use Proactive (contains Benzoyl Peroxide) or anything that contains salicylic acid. One or both are in pretty much every acne medication you find at the drugstore. As far as anything that contains accutane, you will not find any TOPICAL medications that contain accutane because it is a very specific ORAL prescription medication that you can only get through a doctor, and women cannot take accutane while pregnant. You actually have to take 2 pregnancy tests a month with accutane and sign a bunch of forms to ensure that you will not get pregnant while on accutane - it causes severe birth defects. I was on it way before I ever considered getting pregnant about 9 years ago.

Doctors will also tell you to stay away from any prescription strength retinoid, like Retin-A, Tazorac cream, etc. because of the extremely high doses of vitamin A (also in accutane which is the oral form).

My OB may be on the more cautious side when it comes to the OTC meds like proactive and others, so I wouldn't necessarily tell you it is not good to use. If your doctor says it's okay to use it, then I'm sure it's fine.

To help me, I was prescribed erythromycin gel (topical antibiotic) for my face, which was approved as okay by my OB and is a class B drug. I still use it in moderation though.

My best advice is to ask your doctor what he or she thinks. You're going to get a million different opinions and it's better just to ask.

Re: Acne.... what do you use?

I actually have had pretty yucky skin because I'm not using Proactive either. On safefetus.com they list all the drugs and benzoyl peroxide (found in PanOxyl and other topical meds) was given a 'C'. Not worth it to me. So I do just a good scrub with soap and use rosewater for toner. My skin isn't horrid, but I def break out more than before. Oh well....

ETA: I just read about tea tree oil, and forgot totally about that stuff. The Body Shop has a whole line of it and it is a natural remedy that I have tried and does help, so I think I will try it again.

Re: Acne.... what do you use?

Ahhh...... tea tree oil! I'm flying tomorrow and there's a Body Shop in the airport. Guess who's using her airline employee discount?

By the way, I had been using Azelex cream for my face. My derm had said it was considered a class C drug, but said HE felt it was still safe to use since it's such a small amount. I looked on Safefetus.com and Azelex is listed as Class B....

Should I use it?

I'm not a dr. so I can't argue with one. I'm sure the chance of harm is minute, perhaps none, so that's why its ok to use things like Azelex. My opinion is that if there are options that are safer, such as natural remedies, why not try those? I like to think that every effort and every sacrifice, however small, that is in the good interest of the baby may help them be their best. Not just a healthy baby but with greater potential, mentally, physcially, in every way possible.

I've struggled with this (and posted about this before) too... honestly, I am more of a neurotic than most, but despite two different prescriptions given to me (told by both my dermatologist and OBGYN that they were safe) I've opted to just leave my acne alone. What made me decide to do this was that when I read about it online I found way too many conflicting opinions about those two medications, and benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid being safe/unsafe during pregnancy, and I decide to go with nothing!

A few weeks ago I went to the MAC cosmetic counter and had them show me how to conceal my "flaws" with makeup and since then I've been getting a lot of compliments on how I look like I'm "glowing" so for me, that was the best way of dealing with my pimples!!!

Re: Acne.... what do you use?Update with 'nother ?

Purplegirl, I agree.

I've stopped trying to fight the acne because all the medications are so iffy.

So I've invested in a good cleanser and a good concealer and foundation (which I never wore before in my life) and I'll be getting monthly facials (from a prenatal spa).

I wash my face the second I get home from work so it can "breathe" for the rest of the night.
