ADDED: Another question! Where do I start looking for a school for the fall when DS ages out of EI?
ADDED Another Question: Is there a list of schools somewhere? How do I find the schools to go see?
I was told that I needed to start thinking about where I want DS to go but I have no idea where to start. The agency person seems to be a "fan" of DDI but I do not think that is the right environment for DS. He is PDD-NOS but very mild. In fact aside from his speech delay (aside from some signs and words) he is non-verbal, most of his PDD-NOS flags have gone away. He really has come a long way since he started in August (except his speech ) and can only hope that come September perhaps that wont be an issue either.
I guess I would want him in a program for kids similar in abilities to him and/or an inclusion program. Does anyone have any suggestions? We are in Selden (Middle Country School District). Are they bussed at such an early age? Do they go the whole day? My mom watches him on Thursdays and Fridays. Do I have to worry about her picking him up and dropping him off? It is completely paid for by the school district?

My DD PDD-NOS went to ACLD but that's too far for you. My nephew went to the Just Kids location in Middle Island and had a great experience. I don't know too much what the location is currently offering but it might be worth a look!

My son goes to Alternatives for children is Setauket and has done wonderful there. The district offered busing and I think they will let you have different pick up and drop off for babysitting needs.

My DD also went to Alternatives in Setauket. You can definately get busing from the district.

For this coming Fall, you need to have packets sent NOW. Places fill up very fast. There are not enough opening for the demand.
Location, your child needs should help you narrow down your search.
What ratio?
PT or FT program?
Will you want busing or drive yourself? That will help you with deciding on location and how far you can actually go.
Pull our services?

exactly. Bussing will be provided if you want. I would start looking NOW, they fill up.

This was me, exactly 1 year ago. My best advice is to set up appointments to go see some places. I went to all these places and ultimately decided to place DS in a typical pre-school with a SEIT. He also has PDD-NOS that I think is pretty mild, and he is doing awesome in a typical pre-school. However, this may not be for everyone, so go visit both types of places, and you will probably get a feeling of what is best for your DS. DS goes to Teacher's Pet in Farmingville.

Just Kids in Middle Island. They are a fantastic school. They offer many different classrooms, so your child will have a good mix for where he needs to be to suit his needs. They are busing and a full time or part time program.
I have seen great success from students who have gone through their program both personally and professional. FM if you have any questions or need help.

If you call the CPSE office of your school district, they should be able to provide you with a list of schools
ed: I found this:
Approved Preschool Providers - Suffolk
You would search for ones that say "Special Class in an Integrated Setting"

DS goes to Building Blocks in Commack (closer towards Hauppage) They only have a 1/2 day integrated program, but full day for self contained, I believe.
You will get busing if the CPSE approves the program.
We were given a list after our CPSE and we called a few places for tours and picked one.

A place like DDI can provide him with 1:1 instruction for 1/2 day and then push-in to a typical ps class for 1/2 day.
I think it is important to find a balance of direct instruction of skills he might need, and socialization with typical peers.

Agreed. Ours gave us a list of schools that were within busing distance. You can look at any school, but the school district usually has some to direct you towards.
But I would look around now. DS got the same diagnosis last spring, and we did a fast whirlwind tour of a few schools and luckily, got a spot in the one we wanted. But the spots do fill up. He goes to Leeds in Manhasset, and is in an integrated PreK (he just turned 4, though it's a 3 year old class). This school has done wonders--he is such a different child in a school setting this year over last.
Good luck! I'm not familiar with the schools out your way, but I'm sure there are good ones.
