So...I've been looking for a nursery school/day care starting this summer
and I am NOT impressed with anything I see. DS will be about 15 months this summer and I wanted to put him in something 2 days a week for maybe 6 or 7 hours a day. I will still only be working p/t but i thought rather than my mom watching him all day since he is so active it would be good to put him in something like this. I have checked out a couple of places and just find them to be yucky. I live in Merrick so I have checked out a few places around me where I thought they would be nice and wasn't impressed at all. They just look so cold and unhomy to me, some dont look very clean. DH doesnt want him going at all but I said he is old enough at 15 months and will have fun playing with other kids, doing arts and crafts, singing songs, etc. I am beginning to think he is right. I live in Merrick and work about 10 min. down the road in Westbury so I am looking for anything around those areas. I was initially looking for day schools, but they dont take kids until they are 18 mo. since they do not consider themsevles day cares. So maybe I will just wait until he is 18 mo. in Sept. and put him in a day school where it is more school based than day care based.
Do you know of any good places in my area? I feel guilty enough since my family (as I have mentioned before in past posts) is extremely anti-day care...that is why I was looking into day schools but I really feel 2 days a week for 7 hrs. a day isn't bad and will be really good for him. He is so active and I think he will enjoy playing with other little kids and all the activities they do.

did you try Alphabetland? They have locations in North Bellmore and North Merrick and take kids from 6 weeks through 5 yrs old. I'll be honost, I know nothing about them at all, but when I used to teach nursery school a few of my students went there for camp.

I called them today but they have no availability in July and they are not sure about Sept. yet. There is a waiting list.
I think in July I would like to start off with 2 - 1/2 days and see how he likes it and my mom will pick him up and watch him the rest of the day and than starting in Aug/Sept I was thinking of doing 2 full days after he gets accalamated and is a little older.
ETA: My friend did recommend a day care in East meadow. It is a couple that turned 1/2 their house in a day care setting and it was so nice...everything was clean, up to date toys, etc. but I really wanted to put him in more of a school type thing where they will do little art projects, learn colors and that kind of stuff rather than just play all day.
Maybe I am just being too picky. I am just so used to being home with him and if not me, than either DH or my parents...noone else has ever watched him. But I know eventually, I have to let the little man grow up

Big Chief is another good one in East Meadow. I believe they also start at 6 weeks, and they have a great summer program, it's very popular in the area.

I just gave them a call...they start at 18 mo. so that would be Sept. for DS but I definetely can arrange something over the summer for DS before that. It is a day school so I defeinetely like this idea.

I am going to give them a call as well.
Thanks for the good ideas!

My son went to big chief and we had a really bad experience, along with many others.
I recommend MCNS, or Firehouse. Twin Oaks is supposed to be great if you need more of a day care situation. Good luck!

I did a search on here and read something about that. What is MCNS, I never heard of that? And what age does Firehouse take kids...is it 18 months?
ETA: Actually I just realized MCNS stands for merrick community...I called them but they only do mommy and me type things until 2.

The website says their summer program starts at 3 though.
Sorry about the Big Chief recommendation! I don't have any experience with the school first hand, I just know that many people in the area seem to use it.
I also think Twin Oaks might be something looking into. I didn't even think about that one, but it has an excellent reputation! Merrick Woods has a toddler program also.
