Adding cereal to bottles???

So I took DS to the dr. today b/c I wanted the dr. to check him and make sure he is still ok after his tumble off the bed yesterday. All went well with that and the dr said he is absolutely fine and told me to have a drink Chat Icon

So, while we were there he weighed DS. He is over 13 lbs!!!! He gained around 2 lbs since his 2 mo. check up and his 3 mo. check up isnt until next week. I told the dr. he was drinking between 7-8 oz. every 3 hours and still didnt seem satisfied and wasnt napping well. He told me to cut back the formula to 5 oz. but to add 2 tsp. cereal to his bottle. But now I am confused about the nipples. He was already using the fast nipples for 3-6 mo. and it would come out like water, now with the cereal in it, nothing leaks out and it seems like DS is sucking hard. I tried the tri-cut nipple and it's the same. My mother told me I need to make the hole in the nipple bigger with a needle. Is that what we're supposed to do or is that just what parents did 26 years ago? I use playtex drop-ins so do I need to change bottles now?

Re: Question about adding cereal to bottles

it is fine to "cut" a hole in the nipple with a knife or a needle....whatever works, right?

Re: Adding cereal to bottles???

how much formula and cereal did your dr tell you to use?

Also, I read a couple of old posts on here. What is the controversey with adding cereal to formula? Why could it be bad for them? I know "they" say you should feed babies cereal until 6 mo. but my son is drinking 7-8 oz. every 3 hours which is over the recommended amount of formula a day. Some days he does eat less, but most days that is his food intake. I dont want to starve him. Plus I would think it would be healthier for him. Also, why can it be a choking hazars? I read about that as well.

I trust my dr. but I also want to make sure I am doing the right thing. My mother, grandmother and aunts have been telling me for weeks that he needed cereal to help satisfy him. They all had it when they were infants and so did myself and my cousins and we never had any problems of obesity, choking, and NOONE in my entire family has any food allergies. I guess I will have to read up on this more.
