How did you know it was the right time to start medication with your child?
If you didn't medicate what other recourse did you take?

Hi, If you are on FB I suggest joining the ADHD Parent support group. This is a common question and most parents say the only regret is not medicating sooner. From what I have read most parents start to medicate when grades become an issue and/or aggressive behavior.

ADHD moms

This is the moment of truth for us. DS is in third grade and I switched him over to private school so he can be in person 5 days (I’m in queens). This is the first year he will be receiving all his accommodations and therapies, as long as school can remain open.
I have an apt in March to see a neurologist for full testing. I will decide then if he will need medication. His problem is being able to focus and by March I’ll have a more clear picture of how his school year has been going.

Edit to add that I’m thinking if it’s not too much of a necessity to hold off until middle school. I personally want to exhaust all other options.

Re: ADHD moms

If you haven't already look into primitive retained reflexes. It has helped us in so many ways.. especially with focus and attention.

I wouldn’t suggest waiting till middle school. By then it may be to late. I went through this with my stepson and his parents biggest regret was waiting till he was in middle school. I would exhaust all options before medicating but pay attention to behavior and grades. If his grades keep declining don’t wait.

Re: ADHD moms

I posted on this thread 4 years ago when I decided to give my some medicine to help him focus:
ADD Thread

My stepson who is 22, was diagnosed with ADHD. DH and I had battled about his son, going back to when we were dating. I felt that something was off with his son. I wasn’t familiar with ADD so I thought he was suffering from a mental disability. Such as Asperger. The pivotal point was his grades rapidly declining to where he was going to get left back for a second time, getting so mad in school he threw a chair and tried to spit on someone. That is when my DH and his mom, decided to get him evaluated at about 13. After a series of test and IEP from the school, it was suggests he take medication.

Fast forward to my son with DH. My son was a hard case. He struggled in Kindergarten in the beginning, really bad. But he had a strict teacher and turned it around where he was a straight A student. Well kinder at least. Had some issues in 1st and second. But I noticed second was worse than 1st in school. Grades dropping, state test dramatically dropping, lying, not doing work. I privately got my son evaluated because he was in Catholic school. He was diagnosed with ADD tendencies, so not a full diagnosis. But in 3rd grade, his grades dropped so much I put him on medication. It wasn’t easy because if you meet my son, people only comment on how sweet, respectful and calm he is. He doesn’t fit the regular “ADD/ADHD” mold. I mean this kids been on TV shows where he literally acts out the same 5 second scene for 8hrs straight with no complaints. But for some reason in school, it doesn’t interest him so he will lose focus, act out, not pay attention and fall severely behind with out the medication.

There’s so much I can tell you. I’ve dealt with this with both sons and for the past 17 years.Chat Icon

We do exercises everyday. It doesn't take more than a few mins. (5-10 mins a day). Start with 2 exercises for 30 days and then move on 2 different exercises for the next 30 days and so on.

For ADHD I would start with moro reflex, ATNR, and then spinal galant.

Search moro reflex excercise and ATNR exercise in YouTube. You'll find a lot of great videos.

The most important advice... be consistent. Aim for at least 5 days per week.

You can get your child evaluated by an OT as well. However, keep in mind not every OT is trained in this area.
