ADHD Question
I was just wondering when is the earliest a child could be diagnosed with ADHD? Do you see a neurologist for the diagnosis? I was thinking of making an appointment for my son (I know the wait can be months for neurologists/dev peds) but he is 3 so I am not sure if that is too young to take him yet. TIA.

Re: ADHD Question
My neuro won't diagnose my DD until she turns 6 and finishes Kindergarten to see how she does. He likes to wait to make sure its not an immaturity thing. Every Dr. is different, but I like his approach. He does not want to have to diagnose then undiagnosed and said he would not jump on meds right away. I feel like I already know that she has it. So when he finally does diagnose I wont be surprised by it. I have often wondered if she was on the spectrum or if it was adhd. For my DD its just a matter of time when they do.

ADHD Question
I have seen some doctors diagnose as young as 16 months. But I think you would be hesitant to find a doctor to do it so young. Most want to wait until 6 or so.

Re: ADHD Question
We went to a developmental ped this summer. My son is 3. She does suspect ADHD although no formal diagnosis until he is older. But she did write that on his developmental plan and gave us some things to work on with him as well as the school. My son has huge patience issues so she gave us some strategies. He needs tasks to do. The more physical the better (go bring this box here for example). It helps him to focus and he really enjoys doing them! He needs sensory breaks at school and home otherwise he completely melts down (we still have tantrums but they are getting better), etc. things like this.
Go with your momma instinct. If you suspect something follow up on it. So many people kept telling me it was immaturity (he has a late birthday), but ped did some tests. We were there for close to 3 hours over the course of 2 visits. I'm glad I went. We have a follow-up again in April.
