Adopting a kitten with a dog at home?
I really want to adopt a kitten but Im not sure if its a wise decision since I have a very needy and jealous Mini Poodle at home. Has anyone brought a cat home with dogs already in the house?

Re: Adopting a kitten with a dog at home?
We had our cat first and than bought our male dog. Cats are usually the boss of the house, but my male dogs pushes her around He doesnt allow the cat to come near me to be pet or let the cat in the main family room. But he may be slightly different as I am having other issues with him as well. To be honest, they dont interact much. The cat sleeps on my bed or on the window most of the time.

Very needy and jealous dog? NOT GOING TO WORK!! I speak from experience! Did we do it, yes? They barely tolerated each other!

Re: Adopting a kitten with a dog at home?
I had a friend that did that. The poor cat was constantly in fear, hiding or having to stay on top of the fridge or up high somewhere, to stay out of reach of the dog. That's no life for a cat to have.
Can you bring the dog to meet the kitten outside of your house first to see how they interact together? Some dogs will just never let up and it will be a constant battle.

Ugh- that must be heartbreaking to watch. Now that we have 2 cats I know that they obviously aren't going to pass at the same time and I often wonder how on earth the other will deal if one God forbid dies. They are like attached at the tail! Not sure how I'd handle seeing that on top of my own grief! Don't even want to think about that!

Re: Adopting a kitten with a dog at home?
do you know that your dog will be okay around cats? if so, i say go for it
just remember NOT to change your current routine with your dog... take him for walks the same time each day once the cat arrives.... play with him just like you used to and feed him at the same time
also, when introducing the cat to the dog, hold the cat during the first few times you get them aquainted... the dog will see the cat as an extension of you -- and since the dog trusts you, he will be taught to trust the cat too
