Adopting a Puppy

We are looking for a puppy that we are going to plan on getting by Mid-Late August. I know we are against getting a puppy at NSAL - personal reasons, I am just not happy with them - what other reputable rescues/shelters are there on the island? We are looking for a mutt - I have found that typically they have less health problems and I'd rather save my best friend than buy them.. KWIM?

I tried petfinder.com and all of the puppies are coming up in CT or NJ.

TIA

I dont know about puppies, but we got our kitten from West Babylon Animal Shelter and it was a very easy process.

Re: Adopting a Puppy

We didn't adopt a puppy, but a 2.5 year old dog. I found her on Petfinder but she was listed by Heart and Soul Animal Rescue.

They did a home visit and took a detailed application and references, but truly have the best interest of the dogs at heart.

Re: Adopting a Puppy

We adopted our puppy from craigslist. She is 1/2 pug and 1/2 beagle (puggle). She is a relatively high energy dog that a young married couple in Manhattan purchased from a breeder. They had her for 2 months then realized that she required way too much time/attention. They kept her in their small apartment All day, under feeding her and giving her very little water. They only exercise she got was 2 short walks a day.

We offered them $150 for the dog and all of her "stuff" (food, bed, leash, harness, toys, clothes....) We got her at 5months old and now she is 20months old and is the best dog ever!!! I love her to death, but I must say she is the last puppy I will ever get! Puppies are soooo much work! It's amazing how much they calm down as they approach 2years old!!

I'd love to rescue an older dog - my only fear is that we have 3 cats who have never been around dogs and are declawed. I'm afraid of what a dog that's older than a puppy could do to them, atleast with a puppy he/she would grow up around them. KWIM? Thanks for the links - I am going to keep my eyes open :)
