Adopting from NSAL, shelters, etc.

DH and I are looking to adopt a dog, but I'm afraid we'll get turned down because we work full-time and the dog would be alone for 8 hours. We also live in a co-op and don't have a yard. (I lost my dog after 11 years of having her and am fully aware of what it takes to care for a dog).
Do you think we would be turned away from adopting a dog? Chat Icon
(I don't want to purchase one from a pet store as I feel bad hearing how they operate).

Some rescue groups might turn you down but most won't. The biggest concern would be if you were adopting a puppy but most rescuers feel that a dog being in a home, even if they are caged for 8 hours is still much better then a shelter.

I adopted my dog from Brookhaven Municipal Shelter and they didn't even ask. For me, it was very important to adopt from a kill shelter. I know Save-a-Pet would rather see their dogs in a home then a shelter. The only rescue that may give you a problem is Little Shelter.

Good luck!

BTW...Here's my puppy from Brookhaven. She was on "death row".

We adopted from NSAL when Dh & I both worked full time. They were fine with it. NSAL just wants to make sure that you are not a psycho. They may ask for references. In my profile is a pic of Dixie our doggie from NSAL.

try doing a search on petfinders.com. If you live in the city, try the NYCACC. It is a kill shelter. Or if you feel like going on a small trip, try the Hartford Pound in CT. Sherry Pizon is a control officer there and she is amazing.

Here is the site:

hartford

They have a young purebred cockerspaniel there.
