Re: Advice for a newly PG
Definitely try to drink as much water as possible.
Get knowledgeable on the foods you should avoid like artificial sweeteners, certain cheeses, cold cuts, sushi, etc.
Other than that-- don't stress yourself out too much. It is overwhelming at first because there seems to be so much you CAN'T do. But, just use your common sense while being educated on the basics.

Re: Advice for a newly PG
Thanks for starting this thread!
I was at the gym today and I got all nervous about doing abs....should I be? Are there certain exercises I should avoid? I see pregnant ladies at the gym all the time...and I've tried to read up on it but I never get clear answers. I would love to keep up my ab strength for delivery!

Re: Advice for a newly PG
no ab exercises.... also avoid high impact stuff....
but then again, you should always run your routine by your OB and get his/her OK.....

seriously NO abs? Yikes, how do I keep them strong then? There aren't any safe ab exercises?
Yikes...I did a full ab routine today but kinda did it half-arsed. Really took it easy for me.
My OB said I could work out but "nothing crazy." That wasn't specific enough for me!

Congratulations!!
Definitely drink lots of water to stay hydrated.
Make sure if you are hungry.... eat, even if you don't feel hungry, eat...that baby needs nourishment.
Take your prenatals!

Re: Advice for a newly PG
you can do abs-- but, just kill yourself doing them... Do what feels comfortable and don't push yourself too hard... Every doc seems to have a different opinion of this though..

randi - i know you meant "dont" kill yourself doing them, right???
my doc said they were fine in the beginning months.. i started feeling awkward anyway by 10-12 weeks...
and now my energy level is keeping up with my 3rd grade students.. but i go walking and swimming.. maybe a class here and there at the gym..

Re: Advice for a newly PG
#1. You really need to call me before coming on here.
I'm with the ladies, stay hydrated, and eat when you need to eat. My Dr told me everyting in modertaion, so I didn't (and don't) make myself too crazy with avoiding things (except smokes and booze).
If you're a freak like me (which you kinda are), stay away from too many "expecting books" and the like. Some of them can be over-alarming, and forget their audience.
Make a Dr's appt (which I believe you did) to confirm the PG.
And, don't go broke buying every PG test on the shelf!

This is a great board... I'm new too and this helps sooo much.
I'm an exercise nut too. I usually do the treadmill about an hour a day about 4 times a week and I have a cardio kickboxing class. It's a fun class that's mostly cardio so I don't really overdo it. Is that ok?

Re: Advice for a newly PG
My advice to you...is to remember that you are pregnant and not disabled. Continue your routine as normal, your body willl tell you otherwise when you need to make changes. Other than stopping drinking alcohol and not eating certain foods...you should continue to do the same things before. This is my doctor's philosophy and in my eyes it has allowed me to super enjoy being pregnant b/c it has not impacted negatively in any way on my life. I still work out, eat most things I want in moderation and it has made me such a happy preggo.
Good luck!!!!!

Re: Advice for a newly PG
As far as working out for cardio/running and stuff, I think the guidline is not to let your heart rate go above 140 bpm.....maybe someone else on here can confirm that, but that's what I think the number is.....

My doctor gave me the same advice when I was pregnant with DS.
With regards to working out, my doctor gave me the okay to do anything I was doing before (pilates, yoga, running, strength training) with the knowledge that some things will need to be modified as I go further along.
Enjoy this time. Don't read What to Expect When Expecting (I hate that book but to each her own). Be a happy, glowing pregnant lady.

Re: Advice for a newly PG
Congratulations!!
The biggest thing is that MOST aches, pains, stretching, cramping, and discomfort you feel is all normal. You're going to feel all kinds of weird pulls and tugs and muscles strains and it's all your body's way of making room for baby. Unless something is causing super extreme pain there is usually nothing to worry about.
Don't sweat the weight gain..........you're going to gain what you're going to gain, don't make yourself crazy. Eat as healthy as you can but don't obsess over every pound, you will drive yourself crazy!!
Basically, enjoy your pregnancy!!! Try to stay as stress free as you can, don't make yourself sick with worry that something will happen. Chances are everything will be fine and you'll have a happy, healthy baby in 9 months so enjoy every minute of being pregnant!! It's such an amazing time!!!!!

I also agree that What to Expect can be a scary book. The way it is organised it kind of freaky in that the beginning talks about a lot of bad stuff.
Your Preganancy Week by Week was good, and my Fav was Girlfriends guide to Pregnanct & Belly Laughs.
