Any Guidance counselors out there? I need some advice
I'm the only counselor in a small school in NYC. I'm responsible for everything academic for 400 kids. I'm the college advisor and I designed the master schedule for two years. The sheer amount of work is exhausting. I'm one of the first people at work in the morning and one of the last to leave at night. I haven't eaten lunch in two weeks. After a few years of this, I'm considering my options for next year.
My biggest concern is that I won't be able to find a job. I know jobs are scarce on LI. I'll have five years of experience... will that count for anything? Not sure what to do...
eta: please don't quote. I'm probably taking this down soon - never know who's lurking

you sound like a great candidate for a guidance chair/head
have you ever looked into getting your admin cert? (although I'm sure you don't want to add more to your plate)

Maybe looking into an open market transfer as well as LI would open your options. I don't think all city counseling jobs are as intense as yours!!

Re: Any Guidance counselors out there? I need some advice
I work in a school of 489 children. We have three counselors in the building. I was one of the mandated counselors but know I was offered a position which I took as the At Risk Counselor/AIS coordinator in my school. I moved up to the school wide counselor which is a little more responsibilities. I handle discipline, counseling and now AIS. My AP encouraged me to go back to school for Administration because of the multi-tasking and juggling of different tasks, he saw leadership qualities and so I am now in the CITE Program for Administration which I enjoy. I am saying this to say that may you want to explore other avenues if you feel exhausted in counseling or you want to try something new. I did a leave replacement in LI and it is no different from the city, however, they have to go through observations like teachers and it is more intense. You can become a Director of Counseling or transfer to a different school that require more than one counselor. Also in our contract, you have a max of students to see for counseling unless you are the schoolwide counselor of your building which you said you are. GOOD LUCK!! Don't give up.

They should hire assitants for guidance counselors. Just like teacher assitants why don't the have guidance counselor assitants. If they did, I am sure the positions would be filled.
I would do it while taking the counseling courses.
Just and idea that will never be taken seriously!

Maybe looking into an open market transfer as well as LI would open your options. I don't think all city counseling jobs are as intense as yours!!
When I worked in NYC it was 4000 students to 6 counselors. (~700 case load) but they did have a separate college office and a grade advisor (a teacher who helped for 3 periods and had 2 classes)
I'm sure it's overwhelming to do it all yourself. Have you spoken to the UFT rep? maybe a grade advisor is what is needed.

4000 kids and 6 counselors????? You win!
A grade advisor would be great (sigh), but there's no one to do it. All our teachers have to teach full programs. Technically we have an ATR counselor, but she's totally useless. And I don't think I'd transfer anywhere else in NYC... my principal is terrific overall, and my school is right on the border of LI.
So confused...

I subbed fo two years, and that helped. Lots of schools didn't want to talk to a GC w/o teaching experience. I volunteered for a not-for-profit organization and ran teen groups. I worked in a college's admission office too. I was agressive about getting all the right "ingredients" on my resume and then I was equally aggressive about sending them out. Good luck!!!
