advice for the 1 hour glucose test
so, what should I do?
My dr. said it wasn't necessary to fast, but I also know from prior threads that it likely isn't good to eat pasta or cake the night before either
I scheduled the exam for Fri morning before work... so I normally would be 'fasting' (my first meal is lunch at noon)
I sooo don't want to have to endure the 3h test. I'm leaving for europe in 2 weeks, so a 3 hour would be right before I leave... I dread the thought that I would have to learn how to test my sugar levels during the trip

Re: advice for the 1 hour glucose test
Sorry i have no advice, but i wanted to say good luck!
I didn't fast for my test. My doctor said i didn't need to and i didn't. I had my oj and cereal as i normally do every morning... before the test.
I personally don't think it matters because it's all about how your body breaks it down. I just wouldn't go in after eating a few candy bars, that's all.

Re: advice for the 1 hour glucose test
Well I fasted & mine wasn't until 11 am. I also then walked after I drank the stuff, instead of sitting in the waiting room (not sure if it helps or not).

Re: advice for the 1 hour glucose test
I was told no fasting but don't eat a krispy kreme before the test either
Otherwise.. just be normal.
If you try to 'fake' or 'cheat' it you do no good for you or your baby.
sorry but I think its odd when I see the other threads on 'how to pass' this test. Its not a pass or fail its a basic test of how your body is handling sugars. Id rather learn how to regulate my eating habits or even poke my finger while on my vacation then try to bypass it at the cost of my child's health. Besides... my doc said they only require the 3 hour test if you're in a certain range from the 1 hour test. More like a double check. If your levels are fine, no 3 hour test is necessary. If they are extra high then no test is necessary. Its really only the borderline.
I plan to 'act naturally' because after the test is through, I don't think I'll be changing the way I eat, so why throw the test?
*** No offense meant to anyone, of course do what you feel comfortable with, this is just my opinion. *shrug* I'm sure lots of women prep for this exam and have no issues later in their pregnancies. Its just my 'first itme' mom thoughts on this.

Re: advice for the 1 hour glucose test
my lab told me i *should* fast before the test, and then told me i had to "sit still" while i waited. it wasn't nearly as bad as i thought it was - i had a very late dinner (finished at 9:30pm) and didn't have my test till 10:45am the next day.
IMO, from what i have read, it can't hurt to fast.
no idea if i passed yet or not

Well, there's no way to 'cheat' on a blood test (unless you have someone else take it for you). There are numerous things that you do that could result in false positive results (ex. have excess sugar in your system prior to the glucose challenge), and that's what we're all trying to avoid with getting advice from these glucose test posts.... Just becuase of sheer logistics, my Dr. and I don't have the normally wider timeframe to determine whether I have gestational diabetes... so I can't afford to accidentally mess up by doing something I shouldn't (eating something sweet or I also presume drinking too much water right before the exam).
frankly, your comment on how you would 'rather regulate your eating habits or poke your finger while on your vacation then try to bypass it at the cost of your child's health' can only be taken as an offensive comment, becuase it implies that I think otherwise. I'm not a slacker who would compromise my baby's health in order to cow down on scones and clotted cream in london.

Sorry I didnt mean to say youre a slacker. How can you be.. you're pregnant? I think I mean to say take it easy and try not to stress. No matter what, good or bad, you'll deal with it. because exactly that, your baby's health means that much to you.
Sorry again.

I'm sorry for being a bit snippy at you... I'm just worried about being rushed to do several lab runs and possibly even leaving for scotland prior to getting the final results

Re: advice for the 1 hour glucose test
drink water before it might bring your sugar down any carbs eaten the night before should absorbed by the morning I was already borderline so i was tested early I gotta say the insulin is a pain in the azz but I do feel better now and you get used to the diet I dont have to give up to much I buy sugar free cakes and what not they are the same and as long as I follow the carb counting I can have rice krispie treats and anything else I want including ice cream the onlyh difference is that I have to put that extra scoop back lol it's really not awful and the best part is that I have already lost all the wieght I gained in the 1st trimester because I am eating better

i dont think its about trying to trick the test. If you have diabetes then I am assuming it will def show. But my doctor said , when I failed but it was borderline, that it could have been a false positive due to the carbs I ate the night before.
I had a wendys chicken sandwhich and fries

Re: advice for the 1 hour glucose test
I fasted before my 1hr and my 3 hr when I was preggo w/Hayley and I had gestational diabetes.
The nurse at my dr's office said I could eat breakfast like scrambled eggs before the test. I plan on going early in the am so I just won't eat before I go.
And if it happened that you have to take the 3 hr and you don't know the results before you go I think you would be fine. When I found out I failed the 3hr, it was about 2 weeks before I was on a GD diet....I had to meet with a nutritionist to get my diet and I also met with a nurse who taught me how to test my blood. I am sure the Dr would give you guidelines on what you can or can't eat while your away if you are nervous that you don't have the results before you leave.

that is very good to know about that 2 week span you had...... that's precisely what I worry about. what if I have it and I'm ignorant and munching on whatever and not teting for 3 whole weeks the only way the dr could contact me is via email and THEN what?
I'm a nervous nelly. I've been spending my afternoon securing all of my health insurance info / coverage for the trip. empire ppo covers a lot... but I still spend extra for travelers health insurance, just to be safe. 3 weeks is a loooong time to be away (although I will say britian and germany are hardly healthcare vacuums!).

I am not a Dr but I don't think 3 weeks of not strictly following a diet is going to really hurt. If it comes down to it just try to watch what your eating. I am sure the Dr or nurse will give you suggestions and I am sure many of us who had GD can give suggestions of what is good to eat and what isn't.
Just cross your fingers that you pass the 1hr
