Advice needed about Alimentum
so Dr. said to put Gavin on alimentum because the nestle was making him gassy..he wasent miserable all the time just gassy and a few times he woke up screeming from gas..he only gets formula in daycare. I went to get the Alimentum and it said for a protien allergy..so i called the Dr. and he said we can only tell if he has one if we try the alimentum..so he said do it for a week and if we see he's less gassy then it worked..but now i feel guilty because i think i took him off the nestly too quickly..he wasent fussy all the time, he is usually happy it was just a few times screeming and then the gas was CRAZY..farting all the time and smelly...I guess I will do it for a week but if he dosnet need it then I'm wondering if i'm hurting him by giving it to him..
should I stop it or give it a week to see if he is less gassy..I dont want to give him something if he really dosent need it..oh and we are mixing it with BM since i'm still pumping..he also gets BM in the morning and night.

Re: Advice needed about Alimentum
no, you are not hurting him but the only way to know if this is better for him is by using the Alimentum and yes, about a wk.
With DD, she was so colicky that it only took 2 days for the Alimentum and we saw the difference and WHOA it was so much better.
It does say its a protein allergy based formula but because its not "milk"...it may also help in Gavin's gas issues which could be from milk..a lactose problem.

Re: Advice needed about Alimentum
The alimentum won't hurt him Alimentum is a hypoallergic formula-basically the proteins are broken down a bit more for baby to digest easily.
If your doc thinks he may have protein allergy, why not test his stool?
My dd was on alimentum for 2 weeks and we did stool tests everyday to see if blood was still in it. They are super easy to do.
The alimentum didn't help my DD, but we had to try it before Neocate.
Alimentum is expensive too, if doc wants you to try it, i'd ask him for samples
I hope you get some answers

Re: Advice needed about Alimentum
Thank you so much.. I asked if he thought that Gavin had a protien allergy and he said taht if this works then we know that his gas issues were because of the protien. You guys made me feel so much better..at least it won't hurt him and I'll try it for a week..
I told the doctor that he wasent fussy most of the time but the doctor said we want to make him as comfortable as possible which is true..and if it won't hurt him then i guess we can try anything..that GAS is gross LOL

Re: Advice needed about Alimentum
My DD doesnt have a milk allergy but she was gassy and coliky-we tried alimentum as the doctor thought she may just be getting too much lactose to process for a preemie system-she wouldnt drink it plain so we mixed it with similac sensitive and we now have a totally different DD-She gets BM for 4 feedings and 2 formula. It doesnt hurt them just really stinky

Re: Advice needed about Alimentum
You won't hurt him with the Alimentum, or with the changes.
DD was VERY gassy / collicky and it was horrible when we tried the Good Start (Nestle)...we also tried Gentlease and she had a bad reaction to that.
She's been on Alimentum for 1 1/2 months now, and she's doing GREAT! She has terribly stinky farts, and some stinky poops, but she's a much happier baby!!

Re: Advice needed about Alimentum
My DS was on Similac Advance and he was getting terrible gas! Screaming his head off type of gas and smelly too! So we tried Goodstart...after a week he still seemed to be in pain when he had gas, so the Dr. told me to give it at least a 1 1/2 to 2 weeks before switching to Alimentum. He said it could take 2 wks for his system to clear the Similac. I stuck to Nestle for another week and DS has been fine since. He no longer screams in pain he just farts...the smell hasn't gotten any better though. Use your best judgement...goodluck!
