Re: advice please - diaper bag items
Early on... I carried diapers, petroleum jelly, the wipey towels (not the pre-moistened), a back up of formula just in case I ran into a BF situation, an extra onsie, 2 burp cloths, extra water, and a small first aid kit. I am sure there is more but I cannot remember

Re: advice please - diaper bag items
Thinking back....
In the beginning for DS my diaper bag contained:
Diapers Vaseline Wipes (I used them for everything and went through a lot ) Change of clothes Changing pad BM (if I remember correctly it was allowed out for 8 hours and I would take a fresh bottle or two with me) Receiving Blanket Hat
Also...always had the ped's number in my cell phone and his business card in my bag in case there was an emergency.

Re: advice please - diaper bag items
lets see- when DD was newborn I always had:
an extra jumper in case of spit up cloth diapers (spit up cloths) diapers wipes poop bags (to put dirty diapers in) hand sanitizer (for me) a small blanket (when you have to undress them at doc- it's good to have a blanket to wrap them in) pacifier (even if DC doesn't take to it yet) bib rattle/toy

Re: advice please - diaper bag items
When she was under 6 month I carried:
For Baby: Diapers Wipes Aquafor and Diaper rash cream (sample size) Burp Cloth Bib Light Blanket Change of clothes a couple small toys The bags for stinky diapers. Comb Sunblock Changing pad
For Mommy: Tissues Hand Sanitizer Wallet Chapstick Breast Pads comb/brush Nail file pen cell Phone Sunglasses Water bottle
If we were going anywhere for more than a few hours I'd sometimes bring my pump and a bottle. I EBF'd for the first 6 months. Depending on the events of the day I'd throw a camera in sometimes.
Fast Forward to 17 months: No more bibs or burp cloths. I keep a table topper and a disposable bib for impromtu meals out. The change of clothes is now kept in the car, I change it when seasons/sizes change. I've added a small first aid kit. I now carry a sippy cup with water for DD and some snacks for her too. Depending on the day I will throw in cutlery if I know we are eating out, books, the camera and a sun hat or a hat and extra mittens.

Re: advice please - diaper bag items
In the beginning I had: diapers (several) wipes diaper cream just in case change of clothes in case of spit ups or pooping out of diapers burp clothes toys (1 lamaze) binky (when she got very fussy she would occasional take one) plus the strap so she couldn't throw it nursing cover (depending on where we were going) or pumped milk, bottles, ice to keep it cold. extra pair of socks (she was always taking hers off and sometimes we lost one) Blanket (depending on what we were doing)
Small makeup case for powder and lipstick and cell phone, tissues and my wallet.
