Advice? Unconsolable puppies during thunderstorms?

I have tried ignoring the weather and just going about my daily routine, but he still petrified and crying and clingy. I'm letting him lay on my bed right now w/ me because he is panicing and just wants to be w/ momma. I'm affraid to leave him today.

What about leaving the TV or radio on to block some of the noise?

I tried that earlier. It seems like he can hear the slightest rumble miles away. Even for low thunder rumbles he jerks up like it was 1,000 dB on top of him.Chat Icon

i was watching "Good Dog U" on animal planet a while ago. They suggested buying a cd that plays the sound of thunderstorms. Start it at a low volume , where the dog is not bothered by it. As long as the dog is not showing signs of fear, praise him, give him treats, belly rubs, etc. Then gradually increase the volume a little at a time.

Dont priase him if he is showing signs of fear , you dont want to praise for being scared, you only want to praise for NOT being scared. So if you turn it up and he gets scared, turn it down a notch to where he is ok.

eta - eventually you should be able to get the volume up really high and he should have no reaction.

This thread just reminded me to call the vet & refill my dogs tranqulizers. I give him 1/2 a pill when its thunder. Although i dont need the weather channel with my dog, hours before a storm he is all freaked out. Climbing couches, bathtubs..

Anyways , the vet also said benedryl has a calming effect on dogs too, .. Ha Who Knew Chat Icon

I wish this came with ear plugs because thats what she is afraid of.. the THUNDER!!! any loud noises.. TV, Fireworks. Anything loud she hates.. she doesnt shake she just put her tail between her legs and tries to climb.. Very insecure.. I feel so bad for her.
