after-school (DOE people)
Do they try to coerce you into doing after school? My administration is actually PI$$SED that I told them I can't do it.
I have plenty of good and valid reasons why I am unable to stay after school for another hour and a half and I REALLY don't appreciate being pressured by my AP over it and made to feel guilty.
This is something you can choose to do and get PAID EXTRA. It's a choice, and is in no way part of the job description. In the meantime, I volunteer to stay for every after-school event like dances, etc. I am doing a good job, I wish they would leave well enough alone.
I'm curious how this is handled elsewhere......

Re: after-school (DOE people)
I always stay for dances, go to PTA meeting if they need me (I am a guidance counselor so for different topics they ask me to go-no problem).
What I have learned, unfortunatley, is that the more you do, the more you are expected to do.
It is annoying. I currently have a split, I am at 2 schools. At my one school (where I was fulltime, they are great and I don't mind doing extra).
At the new school, bc I am doing a good job, the Principal is giving me the work of another counselor who doesn't do anything
It is frustrating.
Don't feel bad, they are just putting pressure on hoping you will feel bad and just say yes

Re: after-school (DOE people)
The opposite happens in my school: we tend to harass the admin for per session. Most of us are 20-something and broke, lol.
Is your union rep useful? They really can't "make" you stay after your contractual time. Don't feel guilty!

They don't MAKE me stay, just make me feel guilty about leaving.... and the teacher who has my kids for after-school makes me feel bad too emphasizing that she has to now watch "allllllllllll those kids"...... I feel like when I leave early, I get dirty glares from the teachers who stay
Let them glare all they want. I am leaving at 3.

I can see that you are a dedicated, professional teacher..you spend TONS of time on your DAY job..if it's truly VOLUNTARY and you are getting PAID, it is just that...there is no need for guilt and you can even let your colleagues know that..they are CHOOSING to stay and IF they get your kids..que sera sera...good for you standing your ground!

Yep!
Totally guilted into it.
And now apparently I'm being guilted into a feast on Friday from 3-6 pm (non-paid).
I wouldnt mind so much but I am going to a staff persons wedding the next day with EVERYONE that I work with.
ENOUGH!

Thanks It was honestly hard to say no, but I did and they will have to deal with it!
The teacher that has my kids in addition to her own complained to the AP and both asked me if I would please consider staying.... Umm... I am all for making people's lives easier by doing favors if it's a reasonable task.. but this is staying an hour and a half later at school 3 days a week, from now until May. That's not a favor, that's like a second job!
I thought it was rude of that teacher. Obviously if I wanted to do it, I would have signed up in the first place.
