Please share your experiences and outcomes with your DC. TIA (a nervous wreck and very appreciative)

I took both DDs to the ped opthamologist when they were about 5 months and 19 months. DD#1 was showing signs of a lazy eye and DD#2 had been in the NICU at birth and not seen an eye specialist in the hosp, so I was referred to one by my ped.

The exams went well, and did not take very long. Both kids' eyes were dilated and they wore cute little throw away sunglasses that the doctor gave them after the exam was done. There were no tears and overall it was a good visit. DH and I both went to the appt which I was happy about since the wait was kinda long and then we had to wait again for the eyes to dilate. Though DD#1 did not have a true lazy eye (it was psuedo strabismus) we are supposed to go back in one year, which is coming up soon. Good luck and don't worry! If you need a great ped opthamologist and are in Suffolk, we used Dr. Sandra Ahn-Lee in Bay Shore. She is fantastic! Chat Icon

DD was premature and has been routinely seeing an optamologist since 4 weeks of age for retinopathy of prematurity (rop). Each time her eyes are dilated and numbed for the exam. She crys for a bit and it is heart wrenching but it is over pretty quick and she is calmed quickly after. However, my DD is an infant so I am not sure how a toddler would react.

I took DD when she was about 10 mos old...she was fine, they dilated her eyes and it turned out to be psuedo strambisys which apparently is quite common in young children! GL!!

we took my dd when she was about 6 months old. dilation was no big deal. maybe a few tears when they put the drops in, but that was it. hardest part is waiting for the appt, then waiting another 40 minutes after dilation to finish up.

as for outcome, she is extremely farsighted. one eye was stronger than the other, but she wasn't at the stage to have a lazy eye yet. eye turn was minimal (but that how we ended up getting her checked, we noticed it once in a while.)

anyway, she was given a script for glasses, which she has been wearing since 7 months. 1st two months were horrible, she would never keep them on, but she eventually got used to them. now at age 3 she wears them 24/7. sleeps with them on, showers with them, wears them in the tub. and if you try to get them off her face even to clean them she throws a fit.

we've gone back every 6 months or so to get rechecked. so far, her prescription hasn't changed much. doc had said in the 1st year it can change drastically, but we were not lucky enough for that to happen. however, thanks to the glasses, we've had no issues with lazy eye, and you will never see her eyes turn in unless she's been out of her glasses for several days at a time. (which doesn't happen since we have backup pairs)

Thanks-

DD has one eye that seems to turn outward, not inward. It does not happen when she focuses but when she moves her eyes around- especially when she looks out to the corner of her eyes. her left eye seems to turn toward the outer corner more than it should. I notice it a loy when she first wakes, is tired and in picture.Chat Icon

I have esotropia (my rt eye turns in) and I have been wearing glasses since I'm 2. I have seen Dr. Cassari in Pt Jeff for almost my entire life, and he did surgery on me when I was 17....will prob need another when I'm in my 40's or 50's.

Because of my prob, my DS has been seen when he was 6 months, 1year and he will go again when he is 2.5.

I took DS at 11 months because I thought he had a lazy eye. It was pseudo but while there they saw he is +4 farsighted in his left eye. He's been wearing glasses for 2 months now.

The appt itself isn't so bad. He only cries during the drops after that he's fine.

We see Dr. Levi in Plainview. She's part of Marmur's practice. We saw 2 other specialists before staying with her. She was the best.

We went to the eye doctor too, my DDs eye turned in a little.. when she was tired, when we were feeding her, and sometimes when taking a picture from an angle, it looked off.. we went to see dr. pinchoff, turns out we had nothing to worry about and at that age eyes turn in at the exact times i explained... loved him.. he also takes care of my cousin's kids.. one has an eye that turns in and was given glasses... and they will reevaluate later on... the other one wears a patch over one of her eyes... with the hopes that early intervention will keep them from having surgery (its a muscle that holds the eye in place that is weak... so the hope is these things make it stronger without surgery..

But dr pinchoff was amazing.. my DD was just under 1...

We are going to Dr. Cossari today. I am most worried about the outcome being surgery. I am stressed because I know DD is going to freak and also because I know if she needs glasses or to be patched she will not take to it well at all. Chat Icon

hopefully she will not need surgery, but if it is glasses, i completely understand being upset. I took Ian to 3 different doctors because i couldnt come to terms that he needed glasses. but now that he's wearing it, i think he looks adorable and i can't imagine him not wearing them! Chat Icon

dont get me wrong...sometimes he pulls them off and its a struggle to keep on...but its only been 2 months so im hoping it gets easier.
