Age-inappropriate toys!

My MIL seriously drives me up the wall with this!!

When DD turned 1, she bought her a small wooden rocking chair--beautiful, but a nightmare with an active climbing baby! Around that time she also bought her about a million small alphabet blocks...which DD would promptly dump on the floor and then turn around and play with something else...every time! Now, for Easter she decides to buy her...

a 72-piece set of Disney Princess Memory game cards!

A) The child is obsessed with princess stuff.

B) The child has a ridiculously active 10 month old sister who pulls everything off tables, chairs, etc. and who also eats everything.

C) The child--at 2.5--does not understand the concept of "waiting until later" to play with something.

D) and oh, *I* would have a tough time playing Memory with 72 cards! Chat Icon

Re: Age-inappropriate toys!

Why don't you take out most of the card and leave maybe 20 in the game- that way she only has to make 10 matches. As she gets older you can add more cards.
I know you were looking to vent, and vent away, but I figured I'd offer up a suggestion too. Chat Icon

When I get toys like that I do not open them until the age on the box, or when I feel DS can play with them.
I have lots of unopened toys in my closet. Chat Icon

I just have to Chat Icon because your girls sound like mine and I would seriously hurt someone if they gave my DD 72 memory cards. Chat Icon

I think we have as many toys (waiting to be opened) in the basement than we do in the upstairs playroom.

I have things waiting to be opened since my shower. I just put them away until he becomes age appropriate. I like when people think about what children will need down the road personally.

Erin,

Next time you drop her off at your MIL's be sure to give her lots of sugar and be sure to have her bring her princess cards. Chat Icon

DS has a lot of stuffed animals, all for ages 3 and up. Also a magnet picture book. I don't know why people don't get checking the ages--I did this when I bought baby gifts before I had children.

They will all stay put away for a few years.

ditto

I just put it away for another time, I like having things for down the road which actually ends up coming much quicker than I think.

Re: Age-inappropriate toys!

Honestly I dont think that's so bad. I still play with less cards with my DD. And a 10 month old cant hurt themselves if they pull it down. I'd play with it with her when the 10m is sleeping.... like I do with markers or play doh around here when my older kids want it. Those Memory Game sets are cute and easy enough to make really simple.

ETA: You'll see a big change in your DD soon enough...I noticed the biggest changes in my DD and her abilities between 2 1/2 and 3 1/2.
