ah the joy of being a homeowner and the importance of getting quotes.
When we moved into the house the roof and the siding were done by the people we bought it from. But for some resaon, they put plywood on top of the chimney. In the inspection, the inspector told us we would need to get a chimney cap. Ok no big deal.
We thought maybe we would do it ourselves as we have been doing everything, but the roof is very steep and we don't have a ladder high enough to get on the roof. So we call a chimney company to come look at it. So they come and go up on the roof and then sit in the truck for awhile to give us a quote. Now when we called to make the appointment they told us it wouldn't be more than $200. But when they finally come out of the truck, they tell us it is going to be $1275!!
Now for some reason my husband hates to get multiple quotes. He feels bad that people come out then we don't give them a job. I tell him we need to get another quote - he needs to get over it. So we call another company who comes later in the day, and after looking at the chimney and sitting in the truck for awhile they come out with a quote of about $650.
It turns out our chimney is an odd size and we need to have a custom cap . Of course.
Anyhow after this whole long winded post, I wanted to reiterate the importance of getting more than one quote. We will be getting another one for good measure.
Oh yeah and sealing granite countertops is a PTA.

So true, we use at least 2 quotes just for comparison. We have had also $600 price difference on a $2K job.

yup, definitely get a second quote. Dont feel bad, thats part of their job!
We are getting new windows this week. and the quotes ranged from $5700-$8000!
We arent going with the cheapest guy, because he was bad at calling back, late for his appointment, etc. But we definitely arent going with $8K!

We just used Clayton Richards for a sweeping and they seemed incredibly reasonable on pricing.
