Air travel with kids
DD is 3 and has not been on a plane yet
We are planning on flying in the next few months and will be renting a car when we arrive. The only way I can see this working is to bring a car seat on the plane. Is it weird to put a 3 year old in a car seat on a plane?
I am not comfortable renting a seat and the only alternative I can think of would be having one delivered to our hotel and then sending DH to get it, install it, and come back to get us.

It's not weird to have a 3 year old in a car seat on the plane, but might not be comfy for a 5+ hour flight. You can always just gate check the carseat and buckle her in the regular seat belt.

I gate check all the time & have never had a bad experience. Check your car seat... many can’t be put into the airplane (there is a sticker). I have watched mine being placed on & off plane and they have always been good with it.

If you rent from a reputable place, the rental seats should be ok. Are you concerned they will be dirty? Avis, Hertz, etc. should have rentals that are more than acceptable.

Yes the seat we rented from the rental agency the one time we had to was actually cleaner than ours. I really think it was brand new to be honest.

We have always rented car seats from the rental car companies. So much easier that dragging a car seat around an airport. If you’re really bent on bringing on your own, then just gate check it.

Not weird at all. We always use DD's car seat on the plane, even now at 4 years old. She's comfortable in it and like you, I wouldn't want to rent a seat. I also don't like checking seats because you don't know if there can be internal damage by getting tossed around, even with a gate check.

We have gate checked the car seat before and had no issues but I know some people are not a fan of that.

This is what we did at that age. I always found that unless you’re in some type of premium class the car seat is probably more comfortable than the seat on the plane anyway.
The only case in which I wouldn’t have done that would have been if DH wasn’t with me to help me push the stroller with the seat on top of it. In that case if it was just me and DS I would’ve rented a seat.

Re: Air travel with kids
My 13 month old completed her 12th flight today. We use the cosco scenera csrnseat. It was like $35 from Walmart. It weighs 6lbs. We have a super padded case that fits it. It is checked in with our luggage. People in all these stroller and car seat groups I’m in say they use the car seat on the plane but I have never ever seen it. I’m sure it happens but I have yet to see it.

Lol! It’s true! I would actually use the car seats in planes and it was as if the flight attendants have never seen it before. I used it because my kids slept better in it when young (less than 3). Things to know: you need a window seat for the car seat. Otherwise it blocks escape in an emergency. Now, we bring it but gate check it.
We did investigate the rental car seats and got such a disgusting one from enterprise in FL! This was a while ago... maybe things changed.
Now, we use blow up boosters in car rentals for the older 2 (fits in their backpacks) and have an even flo which is very much like the cosco Serena for the 3 year old. My babysitter has it currently installed in her car, we have had it on school bus services, etc. It’s light, easy to use, and gets used because no one really minds it. It was a great buy (and I paid $60 about 5 years ago) and sits in my basement when unused.
In my own car, we use 3 of the super heavy 5 point harnesses. I drive a lot and until the kids outgrow them, it’s what we will do. If the airlines are really rough with the gate check... it still wouldn’t effect me much.
