WWYD - Travel with kids
DH's brother is getting married in Key West in the spring. It will cost us an arm and a leg, and be A LOT of work for the weekend with 2 kids (they'll be 3 and 1.5 yrs or so at that point).
With attire (DH is best man), gift, travel, etc. we're looking at probably about $5K for us to go.
We'll do it, but looking at the schedule, I don't even know that we'll have any "family" time or that it'll be much fun for the kids.
Right now, we're set to arrive Thursday evening (you have to fly into Ft Lauderdale, Miami or West Palm and then drive like 4 hours to get there). Or do a stopover for Key West but flights are about double the cost (in the $600 range per ticket). Friday morning/early afternoon is the "bachelor" party so DH will be out fishing with the guys. Friday night is the rehearsal dinner. Saturday is wedding day (night) but I don't imagine we'll be "hanging out" that day - just doing wedding stuff. Sunday - bride and groom head out. We were going to stay the extra night since we felt it would be a lot to do with kids (drive back up to FLL and fly home after a late night at the wedding). The kids are technically only invited to the church so I may miss the wedding (bringing kids back to the hotel when they're done).
The only person I would leave my boys with in NY is my mom, but she's a teacher, so she is only available from Friday afternoon through the weekend.
So, WWYD given all that information? I don't want to miss out - it's a family weekend and my BIL is getting married, but we have to look at this practically also.
Options in the poll - feel free to suggest something else!

Re: WWYD - Travel with kids
we had a wedding in Viriginia a few months ago and we drove down (5 hrs) with my niece and my son AND my MIL to babysit.
what if your dh went ahead of you on Thurs and and you and your mom flew down fri with the kids so she'd be able to help you out? it's cost a little extra, but it seems like it would be worth it for stress it could alleviate (and the fact you'll actually be able to enjoy some of it)
I just paid out of my nose to take MIL with us to a wedding in Spain. the cost is painful but we all had a good time. to me, if you are already paying $5k, the extra $500 for her ticket isn't all that much more.

Can your mom do a 1/2 day Friday? I would pay her for the amt. she is out of pocket. Can you get a babysitter for Friday? You and DH fly down Friday afternoon. Drive together. You might miss some of the RH.

Re: WWYD - Travel with kids
I'd leave the kids at home with your mother. It doesn't sound like there will be much for them to do down there anyway and this way you'll be able to enjoy yourself.

I dont think I would lug the 2 kids. I would see if there was anyway you could leave them with someone Friday so you and DH could go down Friday morning and come back Sunday leaving your kids with your mom from Friday night-Sunday.

DH is best man and the bachelor party is Friday a.m. so he needs to be down Thursday night.
Travel to Key West is a good 7 hrs + with flight and drive so it's a whole day thing. She's a teacher so not easy for her to just take off during the school year.
She also has a 5 yr old so she has to take care of her as well.

Re: WWYD - Travel with kids
We had a similar situation 2 years ago, execpt we only had one child (he was 6 months old).
DH and I were both in the bridal party.
For just the two of us we were already spending so much money so we decided to make a vacation out of it and went down to Miami a few days earlier. We rented a car and drove to Key West. We brought my mom as a babysitter for DS.
We rented a condo type place (2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, living room, kitchen) for a great price in the heart of town. It worked out great for the baby. I can try to dig up the info if you want.
We did fun things as a family during the days, and at night had my mom watch Landon while we went out. We had an awesome time.

DH has to be down Thursday night for the bachelor party Friday a.m.
He could travel with his family Thursday so I'm assuming we don't have to rent 2 cars. He would also likely be able to stay with his parents for the Thursday night in their suite so he wouldn't have the cost of a hotel room for himself that night.

I def. would not bring the two kids. If I didn't have anyone to leave the kids with, I would just stay home with them.

Re: WWYD - Travel with kids
We just did this, except we went to Texas and it was DH's cousin. We made a longer weekend out of it too Friday- Monday. It was a lot, I'm not going to lie, but we did have fun We were allowed to bring Joey though, if we weren't allowed I would've brought my mother with me or just stayed home and sent DH to go with his family.

Bringing my mom isn't an option b/c of her work, and her 5 yr old. Plus, it's already going to be so expensive - nevermind adding her flight, etc.

Also adding - another option is for DH to go ahead with family Thursday and I can fly to Key West at the added expense Friday I guess (but saving $$ b/c then we wouldn't rent any car just hop in with family - or I believe there will be a trolley for the actual wedding so no transport really necessary)

OH, I thought you said she was an option Friday through weekend. Hmmm, this is a tough one. Have you ever been to Key West? It is beautiful and a lot of fun, even with kids. Even if he will be gone for the bachelor party on Sat. you could still have fun with the kids. (will anyone else be with you from his family?)
As far as cost, if it helps any we stayed at the Sheraton Suites for 4 days on our honeymoon and it was inexpensive, very roomy (with little kitchen). . to bring costs down you could look into there. (just trying to help in case you do want to go)

Re: WWYD - Travel with kids
Would you mind travelling by yourself? It if was me I would ask my mom to watch the boys. I would have DH fly down on Thurs with family. Then I would fly down Fri after mom got off from work, or if you can drop the boys off at daycare that day and she pick them up. Then I would come home late Sunday.
If that is not posible then I would just bring the boys and I would enjoy the quality time with them while DH is off doing wedding things.

Re: WWYD - Travel with kids
We would all go, kids too. It's my BIL, I would not want to miss it. What about making a week vacation out of it for the family so you're not rushing around just for the weekend? Should be less than $5k for the week... around $1k for flights (3 seats & 1 lap child), $1k for hotels for the week ($150/night), maybe $1k for car rental for the week and then money for food, some activities, wedding gift, etc.

Oh, I meant it was an option for her to watch the kids in NY. The hotel isn't all that bad with the wedding rate - I think it's actually the Sheraton Suite you mention.
We have been to Key West on a trip when we dated - def. a nice spot but the issue is lack of time to enjoy it.
The bachelor party is Friday morning-afternoon. Rehearsal dinner Friday evening. Wedding is Saturday night.

Re: WWYD - Travel with kids
If your kids are in daycare, I'd bring them there Friday AM, fly out, have your mom pick them up from day care after she's done with work.
I'd fly home with DH Monday AM and ask your mom to bring kids to daycare before she has to be at work on Monday.
Sounds like a lot going on in Key West for the wedding and for me, personally, my kids are those ages now and I don't think I'd want to be dragging them around.

The hotel they want us at is $250 or so a night - still reasonable, but not $150.
So far, these are the costs:
$250/night hotel (if 6 that's about $1500 + tax) about $1K flights probably $1K car rental
DH suit they want him to buy $400
If Ryan goes, he's a ring bearer so whatever that'll cost with matching outfit for Colin
Bachelor party an easy $500 (charter boat)
Food easily $100/day
Gift at least $500
Activities I'm sure $500 easily for a week's stay
Plus lost vacation time, and paying $600 for daycare we won't be using
I just know it's always $1K more than you anticipate - at least
ETS: If the kids are with us, then I'm likely only going to the church portion of the wedding - not the reception. Church starts at 8PM. I'm not comfortable with a strange babysitter watching my kids at the hotel - esp since it's a 10-15-minute drive from wedding location so I can't even just pop my head in to check in on them.

Re: WWYD - Travel with kids
I would do one of two things:
1. just you and DH go on the planned dates and find childcare for your kids for when your mom can't watch them
2. extend the vacation and all go (everyone arrives and leaves at the same time)
It's too much for you to travel with 2 kids by yourself and it's a lot of work to do it just for a couple days (when you factor a whole day of traveling on each end of the trip).
