I read something that said if the car will sit for over 3 months you should loosen certain belts - for the alternator, power steering, a/c; lubricate the locks; and lift the car onto blocks to raise the wheels off the ground or take off the tires completely and store them flat. There was also discussion of the computer systems being affected by long term disconnection of the battery - which should be done, or get some kind of charger that can be left on the car and won't over charge the battery and also that any gasoline left sitting in the car can start to degrade. Fun stuff - not!

I called Acura and although the guy I spoke to was very nice, he was completely unhelpful about this stuff. DH has a friend who does a lot of work on cars (has his own shop), so I guess we will ask him about it and see what he has to say

Which Acura store? I work for an Acura dealer and have an affected car as well. The problem is that Takata supplied airbags for every car line- no line is unaffected. I know that the supply of airbags is directed down south right now because one of the causes of the defect is humidity. They are working on getting new airbags from other suppliers but will be ordered by vin number. There have been ZERO deaths in Acura vehicles related to this recall. That being said, I did opt for a rental- ONLY because I'm pregnant. My husband is a technician in the shop here as well. Feel free to contact me with any questions you might have. I hope that I can help with any uncertainties....

OMG, I'M GONNA DIE!!!!!!

SHRAPNEL IS COMING OUT OF THE AIRBAGS AND SLICING MY CAROTID ARTERY!!!!

Chat Icon That has happened and can happen again. That's why there is a massive recall of every car that has the defective airbag. Not sure why you think this is something to make fun of???

Exactly! She came out of a 4 year hiding for this stupid comment. Dumb!

Actually, my car is affected as well, and I'm legitimately concerned - there's nothing we can do at this point, other than drive extra carefully. But hey, thanks for calling me dumb! Way to empower one another!

Shouldn't we always be driving extra carefully?? And that will do nothing as one other person driving like a fool on the roads can easily cause an accident you can't avoid.

Re: Airbag recall - UPDATE

I just heard on the radio that a girl was in a minor rear end collision last week, airbag deployed, and the shrapnel from the airbag is what killed her. She got up and walked out of the car, but then fell over. It had sliced her neck open. Scary stuff!!

Idk if it was the same story but I saw a 17yo girl was just killed by shrapnel after a fender bender. Chat Icon They said it was the 10th person in the country killed by these defective airbags.

Re: Airbag recall - UPDATE

I just read about this poor girl & called my dealership to get more info like how hard do you need to be hit in order for the air bag to inflate, when is the airbag eta, etc.. They had no info for me. They knew nothing. So I am in hold now trying to get car rental info. I was planning on driving my car until I saw this article & saw the girl had very minor damage to her car & the air bag deployed. Now I am nervous since there are so many careless & ****** drivers out there & no one can tell me if even a light tap will cause them to go off.

From experience in accidents, it has to be more than a light tap. I smashed up my front end pretty bad and my airbags did not deploy. I wasn't going fast though, maybe 15 -20 mph at the time of the impact.
I read this recently:

Generally speaking over 25MPH. The impact must be frontal and not side. Thats 25mph as if you hit a wall, non moving obsticle. If you hit a car from behind and it moves forward then the impact must be much greater to fire the bags. Also hitting a car head on when both vehicles are moving at say 12MPH will set them off. So any combined frontal force over 25MPH will usually do it.

Either way I would not be comfortable at all driving a car that is on the recall list.
See if you can get a rental ASAP.

Re: Airbag recall - UPDATE

I've seen accidents under 25mph and the air bags deployed.
There's a video on youtube of a guy rocking out in his car banging on the dashboard and all of the sudden the airbags went off (hilarious video lol). As you can see by this recall, parts don't always function right. You could have a car with sensitive sensors. Even if they only go off in a serious accident... that's still a pretty big risk your taking. You're basically gambling with your life.

Re: Airbag recall - UPDATE

Also wanted to add they can go off if you're hit from the side or if you're rear-ended, it's not just if you have a frontal impact.

You have no idea if it will be a "light tap" though. I personally wouldn't risk it. I would take a rental, and get my car off the road.

I got my rental today from Acura. It was easy. But I would suggest acting sooner rather than later because the guy from Hertz said there is a shortage of rentals due to the number of recalls

Re: Airbag recall - UPDATE

my toyota matrix was part of the recall last year. I called our dealership and they were booked for months with the part being on backorder. I just waited it out. it was for the passenger recall and 99% of the time I dont drive with any one in the front passenger seat.

I just got it replaced a few weeks ago. didnt take long for them to do it.

Did Acura give you a certain $ amount per day for the rental? I think I remember a PP mentioned her dealership only paid for $30 a day?

No, Acura just pays for the rental directly and they set it all up. I went to the dealer (DH drove me in his car), signed some paperwork and then someone from the rental agency picked me up and brought me to the rental place to get the car. I had to give a credit card at the rental agency - they took a $250 hold which comes off after a couple of days because it is being 100% covered by Acura.

I had a similar experience but Hertz came to Acura and they only out $50 hold on my credit card. Acura is covering 100% of it

Thanks for update. I called Audi, and they have not received the parts yet, nor did they give me the option to rent a car.

Airbag recall - Final Update

Ugh I just called Honda and was told that they don't expect the parts to be in until December! We don't drive our car that much because we are currently in Brooklyn so I didn't feel the need to get a rental, but will be using it daily come this summer when we move to LI.

I guess I'm going to have to call to find out more about a rental....

For those that have Hondas that have had their airbags replaced, what dealership did you go to?
